Tom is eight years old. He lives in the city with Mum and Dad. But now it is the holidays, and Tom is at Grandpa’s. Grandpa has a small house with a big garden.
In the garden there are tomatoes, lettuce and flowers. But the strawberries are the best. They are red and sweet. Grandpa loves his strawberries. Tom loves them too.
«Mañana hacemos una tarta de fresa», dice el abuelo por la tarde. «Las fresas ya están maduras». Tom se ríe. «¡Genial! ¡Yo ayudo!»
“Tomorrow we’ll bake a strawberry cake,” says Grandpa in the evening. “The strawberries are ripe now.” Tom laughs. “Great! I’ll help!”
In the morning Tom and Grandpa go into the garden. Tom has a big bowl. But then Grandpa stops. “What is this?”
Muchas fresas no están. Otras fresas solo están por la mitad. ¡Alguien come las fresas del abuelo!
Lots of strawberries are gone. Other strawberries are only half there. Somebody is eating Grandpa’s strawberries!
«¡Un ladrón!», grita el abuelo. «¡Un ladrón de fresas!»
“A thief!” shouts Grandpa. “A strawberry thief!”
«¿Quién es el ladrón, abuelo?», pregunta Tom. «No lo sé», dice el abuelo. «¿Quizás un pájaro?»
“Who is the thief, Grandpa?” asks Tom. “I don’t know,” says Grandpa. “Maybe a bird?”
En el tejado hay un pájaro sentado. Es negro y tiene un pico amarillo. Canta fuerte. «¿Eres tú el ladrón?», pregunta Tom. El pájaro solo sigue cantando.
A bird is sitting on the roof. It is black and has a yellow beak. It sings loudly. “Are you the thief?” asks Tom. The bird just keeps singing.
Then a dog comes into the garden. That is Bello. Bello lives with Mrs Klein, in the house on the left. He is big and brown, and he eats everything.
«Bello, ¿eres tú el ladrón?», pregunta el abuelo. Bello mueve la cola. Parece muy simpático.
“Bello, are you the thief?” asks Grandpa. Bello wags his tail. He looks very nice.
«Ahora ningún pájaro llega a mis fresas. Y ningún perro».
In the afternoon Grandpa puts a net over the strawberries. “There,” he says. “Now no bird can get to my strawberries. And no dog.”
