Tom is eight years old. He lives in the city with Mum and Dad. But now it is the holidays, and Tom is at Grandpa’s. Grandpa has a small house with a big garden.
Tom ist acht Jahre alt. Er wohnt mit Mama und Papa in der Stadt. Aber jetzt sind Ferien, und Tom ist bei Opa. Opa hat ein kleines Haus mit einem großen Garten.
In the garden there are tomatoes, lettuce and flowers. But the strawberries are the best. They are red and sweet. Grandpa loves his strawberries. Tom loves them too.
Im Garten sind Tomaten, Salat und Blumen. Aber die Erdbeeren sind am besten. Sie sind rot und süß. Opa liebt seine Erdbeeren. Tom liebt sie auch.
“Tomorrow we’ll bake a strawberry cake,” says Grandpa in the evening. “The strawberries are ripe now.” Tom laughs. “Great! I’ll help!”
„Morgen backen wir einen Erdbeerkuchen“, sagt Opa am Abend. „Die Erdbeeren sind jetzt reif.“ Tom lacht. „Super! Ich helfe!“
In the morning Tom and Grandpa go into the garden. Tom has a big bowl. But then Grandpa stops. “What is this?”
Am Morgen gehen Tom und Opa in den Garten. Tom hat eine große Schüssel. Aber dann bleibt Opa stehen. „Was ist das?“
Lots of strawberries are gone. Other strawberries are only half there. Somebody is eating Grandpa’s strawberries!
Viele Erdbeeren sind weg. Andere Erdbeeren sind nur noch halb da. Jemand isst die Erdbeeren von Opa!
“A thief!” shouts Grandpa. “A strawberry thief!”
„Ein Dieb!“, ruft Opa. „Ein Erdbeerdieb!“
“Who is the thief, Grandpa?” asks Tom. “I don’t know,” says Grandpa. “Maybe a bird?”
„Wer ist der Dieb, Opa?“, fragt Tom. „Ich weiß es nicht“, sagt Opa. „Vielleicht ein Vogel?“
A bird is sitting on the roof. It is black and has a yellow beak. It sings loudly. “Are you the thief?” asks Tom. The bird just keeps singing.
Auf dem Dach sitzt ein Vogel. Er ist schwarz und hat einen gelben Schnabel. Er singt laut. „Bist du der Dieb?“, fragt Tom. Der Vogel singt einfach weiter.
Then a dog comes into the garden. That is Bello. Bello lives with Mrs Klein, in the house on the left. He is big and brown, and he eats everything.
Dann kommt ein Hund in den Garten. Das ist Bello. Bello wohnt bei Frau Klein, im Haus links. Er ist groß und braun, und er frisst alles.
“Bello, are you the thief?” asks Grandpa. Bello wags his tail. He looks very nice.
„Bello, bist du der Dieb?“, fragt Opa. Bello wedelt mit dem Schwanz. Er sieht sehr nett aus.
In the afternoon Grandpa puts a net over the strawberries. “There,” he says. “Now no bird can get to my strawberries. And no dog.”
Am Nachmittag legt Opa ein Netz über die Erdbeeren. „So“, sagt er. „Jetzt kommt kein Vogel an meine Erdbeeren. Und kein Hund.“
