On the day of Murten's Solennität, twelve-year-old Emil is so ashamed of his French-speaking mother that he runs off to the town wall. Out of a sudden mist he steps into the siege of 1476, where speaking French can get you hanged as a spy, and where a kitchen boy from the Burgundian camp turns out to need him, and both his languages, more than anyone ever has.
