In each language: Zwei Sprachen in Murten · Two Languages in Murten

On the day of Murten's Solennität, twelve-year-old Emil is so ashamed of his French-speaking mother that he runs off to the town wall. Out of a sudden mist he steps into the siege of 1476, where speaking French can get you hanged as a spy, and where a kitchen boy from the Burgundian camp turns out to need him, and both his languages, more than anyone ever has.

Die Solennität

The Solennität

On the morning of the twenty-second of June, a scent of roses and gunpowder hung over Murten, and Emil Vonlanthen wished he were invisible. The main street was decked with flags, garlands of flowers hung from the arcades, and everywhere parents stood with their phones, filming their children's every step. Today was the Solennität, the biggest festival of the year. For more than five hundred years the little town had celebrated the Battle of Murten on this day, and for seven years Emil had marched in the procession.

He was wearing a white shirt that scratched at the collar and a wreath of oak leaves that he would have liked best to throw into the lake. Beside him, Lars from his class was drumming so loudly, as if he wanted to drive off the whole Burgundian army by himself. He was as boastful as ever.
