Why

现在 xiànzài 是 shì 下午 xiàwǔ 四 sì 点 diǎn 。 厨房 chúfáng 很 hěn 安静 ānjìng 。

It is four o’clock in the afternoon. The kitchen is quiet.

盘子 pánzi 里 lǐ 没有 méiyǒu 面包 miànbāo 了 le 。

There is no more bread on the plate.

Nina 把 bǎ 她的 tāde 钥匙 yàoshi 放 fàng 在 zài 桌子 zhuōzi 上 shàng 。

Nina puts her key on the table.

“ 为什么 wèishénme ？” 她 tā 说 shuō 。

“Why?” she says.

奶奶 nǎinǎi 看 kàn 钥匙 yàoshi 。

Grandma looks at the key.

“ 为什么 wèishénme 什么 shénme ？”

“Why what?”

“ 为什么 wèishénme 这 zhè 一切 yíqiè ？ 一张 yìzhāng 便条 biàntiáo ？ 一个 yígè 信封 xìnfēng ？ 一扇 yíshàn 蓝色的 lánsède 门 mén ？”

“Why all this? A note? An envelope? A blue door?”

“ 它 tā 是 shì 一扇 yíshàn 好 hǎo 门 mén 。”

“It is a good door.”

“ 这个 zhège 镇 zhèn 有 yǒu 很多 hěnduō 蓝色的 lánsède 门 mén ， 奶奶 nǎinǎi ！ 不 bù ！ 不 bù ！ 不 bù ！”

“There are a lot of blue doors, Grandma! No! No! No!”

“ 是 shì 。”

“Yes.”

“ 你 nǐ 有 yǒu 手机 shǒujī ！ 你 nǐ 能 néng 说 shuō ：Nina， 来 lái 旅馆 lǚguǎn 。”

“You have a phone! You can say: Nina, come to the hotel.”

“ 是 shì ，” 奶奶 nǎinǎi 说 shuō 。“ 我 wǒ 能 néng 这样 zhèyàng 说 shuō 。”

“Yes,” Grandma says. “I can say that.”

Nina 站 zhàn 起来 qǐlái 。 她 tā 喊 hǎn 。

Nina stands up. She shouts.
