앞니가 흔들흔들

파울은 여섯 살이다. 파울은 이가 하나 흔들린다. 그 이는 앞에 있다. 위쪽 가운데에 있다.

Paul is six. He has a wobbly tooth. The tooth is at the front, at the top, in the middle.

파울이 혀로 이를 흔든다. 이가 앞으로 간다. 파울이 또 흔든다. 이가 뒤로 간다. 하지만 이는 안 빠진다.

Paul wiggles it with his tongue. The tooth moves forward. Paul wiggles it again. The tooth moves back. But it won’t come out.

학교에서 리자는 이가 하나 없다. 요나스는 이가 두 개 없다. 알리는 이가 세 개나 없다. 파울만 아직 이가 다 있다.

At school Lisa has a gap. Jonas has two gaps. And Ali even has three gaps. Only Paul has no gap yet.

“알리한테는 이빨 요정이 와.” 리자가 말한다. “매일 밤 와. 알리는 부자야.”

“The tooth fairy comes to Ali,” says Lisa. “Every night. Ali is rich.”

파울도 빈자리가 갖고 싶다. 그리고 파울도 이빨 요정을 만나고 싶다.

Paul wants a gap too. And he wants the tooth fairy too.

집에서 파울이 엄마에게 묻는다. “엄마, 이는 어떻게 빠져요?”

At home he asks Mum. “Mum, how does the tooth come out?”

“사과를 먹어.” 엄마가 말한다. “크고 딱딱한 사과를 먹어.”

“Eat an apple,” says Mum. “A big, hard apple.”

파울이 사과를 먹는다. 파울이 세게 깨문다. 이가 흔들린다. 하지만 안 빠진다. 파울이 사과를 또 먹는다. 또 하나 먹는다. 이제 파울은 배가 아프다. 하지만 이는 아직 그대로 있다.

Paul eats an apple. He bites hard. The tooth wobbles. But it stays in. Paul eats another apple. And another one. Now Paul has a tummy ache. But the tooth is still there.

그때 아빠가 집에 온다. “아빠한테 계획이 있어.” 아빠가 말한다. 아빠가 실을 가져온다. “실을 이에 묶어. 그리고 실을 문에 묶어. 그다음에 아빠가 문을 닫아. 쾅! 이가 쏙 빠져.”

Then Dad comes home. “I have a plan,” he says. He fetches a piece of string. “We tie the string to the tooth. And we tie the string to the door. Then I shut the door. Bang! And the tooth is out.”

파울이 실을 본다. 문을 본다. 아빠를 본다. “아니요, 괜찮아요.” 파울이 말한다. 그리고 자기 방으로 얼른 달려간다.

Paul looks at the string. He looks at the door. He looks at Dad. “No, thank you,” says Paul. He runs quickly to his room.
