Ernesto i Pablo przez czterdzieści lat codziennie grali w domino, czasami po południu, a czasami wieczorem. Zawsze siedzieli przy tym samym stole, przed domem Ernesta na małej ulicy w Hawanie.
For forty years Ernesto and Pablo played dominoes every day, sometimes in the afternoon and sometimes in the evening. They always sat at the same table, in front of Ernesto’s house in a small street in Havana.
Kamienie były stare. Ojciec Ernesta zrobił je siedemdziesiąt lat temu z czarnego drewna. Punkty były małymi, płaskimi dziurkami z białą farbą. Teraz farba była szara i cienka. Kamienie leżały w małym drewnianym pudełku i Ernesto bardzo je lubił. Był stolarzem, tak jak jego ojciec.
The tiles were old. Ernesto’s father made them out of black wood seventy years ago. The dots were small, shallow holes with white paint. Now the paint was grey and thin. The tiles lay in a small wooden box, and Ernesto loved them. He was a carpenter, like his father.
Obok pudełka zawsze leżał zeszyt. W nim obaj zapisywali każdą grę: dzień, godzinę i nazwisko zwycięzcy. Każdego roku mieli nowy zeszyt. Kto na końcu roku prowadził, ten wygrywał rok.
Next to the box there was always a notebook. In it the two of them wrote down every game: the day, the time and the name of the winner. Every year they had a new notebook. Whoever was ahead at the end of the year won the year.
Przez trzydzieści dziewięć lat zawsze wygrywał Pablo. Nigdy wieloma grami, ale zawsze. Myślał szybciej i lepiej liczył, i chętnie to mówił.
For thirty-nine years Pablo always won. Never by many games, but always. He thought faster and counted better, and he liked to say so.
But this year everything was different. Since the spring Ernesto had won a lot of games, more than before. At the end of October he was ahead for the first time: one game ahead of Pablo. Ernesto opened the notebook every day and looked at the number. He was very proud.
W pewien poniedziałek Pablo wypił kawę i długo nic nie mówił. Potem powiedział: „W sobotę lecę do Walencji, do mojej córki Marisol. Wprowadzam się do niej”.
One Monday Pablo drank his coffee and said nothing for a long time. Then he said, “On Saturday I’m flying to Valencia, to my daughter Marisol. I’m moving in with her.”
„Na zawsze?”, zapytał Ernesto.
“For good?” Ernesto asked.
„Na zawsze. Ona mówi, że stary człowiek nie powinien mieszkać sam. W piątek gramy ostatni raz”.
“For good. She says that an old man shouldn’t live alone. On Friday we play for the last time.”
Ernesto długo patrzył na zeszyt. Potem zaśmiał się, ale to nie był dobry śmiech. „Więc wygram w tym roku”, powiedział. „Po trzydziestu dziewięciu latach”.
Ernesto looked at the notebook for a long time. Then he laughed, but it was not a good laugh. “Then I win this year,” he said. “After thirty-nine years.”
„Jeszcze nie ma piątku”, powiedział Pablo.
“It isn’t Friday yet,” Pablo said.
