The First Customer

“From the bakery,” Ana says. “From the back step. In the morning, the bread isn’t there. Only the bag. Like this.”

“Da bakery,” diz Ana. “Do degrau dos fundos. De manhã, o pão não está ali. Só o saco. Desse jeito.”

Priya picks up the paper square. She looks at it. Then she puts it in Ana’s hand and closes Ana’s fingers on it.

Priya pega o quadrado de papel. Ela olha para o papel. Depois coloca o papel na mão de Ana e fecha os dedos de Ana.

“Keep it in your pocket, my dear,” she says. “And don’t show it to Walter. Please.”

“Guarda no bolso, querida,” diz ela. “E não mostra para o Walter. Por favor.”

“Why? Who takes the bread? Do you know?”

“Por quê? Quem pega o pão? Você sabe?”

Priya smiles again, but it is not a real smile. “Your cake, Ana. Don’t forget your cake.” And she starts to talk about the weather.

Priya sorri de novo, mas não é um sorriso de verdade. “Seu bolo, Ana. Não esquece do bolo.” E ela começa a falar do tempo.

That night, at three o’clock, Ana is in the bakery again. The bag is on the back step again. Walter doesn’t talk about it. Ana doesn’t ask.

Naquela noite, às três horas, Ana está na bakery de novo. O saco está no degrau dos fundos de novo. Walter não fala dele. Ana não pergunta.

At twenty to five, Walter says, “Today you sell. I’m busy with the oven. Rolls are one pound fifty. Coffee is one pound eighty. Tea is one pound twenty. The prices are on the wall.”

Às vinte para as cinco, Walter diz: “Hoje você vende. Estou ocupado com o forno. Pãozinho custa uma libra e cinquenta. Café custa uma libra e oitenta. Chá custa uma libra e vinte. Os preços estão na parede.”

“I sell? Alone?”

“Eu vendo? Sozinha?”

“Alone. You can count, can’t you?”

“Sozinha. Você sabe contar, não sabe?”

At ten to five, a big green bus stops outside. On the front of the bus, there is a number: N7. The driver gets off. He comes into the shop. The bell over the door rings.

Às dez para as cinco, um ônibus verde grande para do lado de fora. Na frente do ônibus, tem um número: N7. O motorista desce. Ele entra na loja. O bell em cima da porta toca.

He is tall, with a short beard and a woolly hat. He has a yellow jacket. “Good morning!” he says. Then he stops. “You’re not Walter.”

Ele é alto, tem barba curta e gorro de lã. Ele veste uma jaqueta amarela. “Bom dia!”, diz ele. Depois ele para. “Você não é o Walter.”

“No. I’m Ana. I’m the new night baker.”

“Não. Eu sou a Ana. Sou a nova padeira noturna.”

“Good! Walter isn’t nice at five in the morning,” he says, and he laughs. “I’m Daniel. I drive the night bus. Every morning, I want two cheese rolls and a coffee. Every morning, the same.”

“Que bom! Walter não é simpático às cinco da manhã,” diz ele, e ri. “Eu sou o Daniel. Eu dirijo o ônibus noturno. Toda manhã, quero dois pãezinhos de queijo e um café. Toda manhã a mesma coisa.”

Ana puts two cheese rolls in a bag. She makes the coffee. Her hands are slow. She looks at the prices on the wall.

Ana põe dois pãezinhos de queijo num saco. Ela faz o café. As mãos dela são lentas. Ela olha os preços na parede.
