Ana “Fırından,” diyor. “Arka basamaktan. Sabah ekmek orada yok. Sadece çanta var. Bunun gibi.”
“From the bakery,” Ana says. “From the back step. In the morning, the bread isn’t there. Only the bag. Like this.”
Priya kare kâğıdı alıyor. Kâğıda bakıyor. Sonra onu Ana’nın eline koyuyor. Ana’nın parmaklarını kapatıyor.
Priya picks up the paper square. She looks at it. Then she puts it in Ana’s hand and closes Ana’s fingers on it.
“Onu cebinde tut tatlım,” diyor. “Ve Walter’a gösterme. Lütfen.”
“Keep it in your pocket, my dear,” she says. “And don’t show it to Walter. Please.”
“Neden? Ekmeği kim alıyor? Biliyor musun?”
“Why? Who takes the bread? Do you know?”
Priya yine gülümsüyor. Ama bu gerçek bir gülüş değil. “Kekin, Ana. Kekini unutma.” Ve hava hakkında konuşmaya başlıyor.
Priya smiles again, but it is not a real smile. “Your cake, Ana. Don’t forget your cake.” And she starts to talk about the weather.
O gece saat üçte Ana yine bakery’de. Çanta yine arka basamakta duruyor. Walter bunun hakkında konuşmuyor. Ana sormuyor.
That night, at three o’clock, Ana is in the bakery again. The bag is on the back step again. Walter doesn’t talk about it. Ana doesn’t ask.
Beşe yirmi kala Walter söylüyor: “Bugün sen satıyorsun. Ben fırınla meşgulüm. Yuvarlak ekmekler bir pound elli. Kahve bir pound seksen. Çay bir pound yirmi. Fiyatlar duvarda.”
At twenty to five, Walter says, “Today you sell. I’m busy with the oven. Rolls are one pound fifty. Coffee is one pound eighty. Tea is one pound twenty. The prices are on the wall.”
“Ben mi satıyorum? Yalnız mı?”
“I sell? Alone?”
“Yalnız. Sayı sayabiliyorsun, değil mi?”
“Alone. You can count, can’t you?”
Beşe on kala dışarıda büyük yeşil bir otobüs duruyor. Otobüsün önünde bir numara var: N7. Şoför iniyor. Dükkâna giriyor. Kapının üzerindeki zil çalıyor.
At ten to five, a big green bus stops outside. On the front of the bus, there is a number: N7. The driver gets off. He comes into the shop. The bell over the door rings.
O uzun boylu. Kısa bir sakalı ve yün bir şapkası var. Sarı bir ceketi var. “Günaydın!” diyor. Sonra duruyor. “Sen Walter değilsin.”
He is tall, with a short beard and a woolly hat. He has a yellow jacket. “Good morning!” he says. Then he stops. “You’re not Walter.”
“Hayır. Ben Ana. Ben yeni gece fırıncısıyım.”
“No. I’m Ana. I’m the new night baker.”
“Güzel! Walter sabah beşte iyi değil,” diyor ve gülüyor. “Ben Daniel. Gece otobüsünü sürüyorum. Her sabah iki peynirli ekmek ve bir kahve istiyorum. Her sabah aynı.”
“Good! Walter isn’t nice at five in the morning,” he says, and he laughs. “I’m Daniel. I drive the night bus. Every morning, I want two cheese rolls and a coffee. Every morning, the same.”
Ana bir torbaya iki peynirli ekmek koyuyor. Kahveyi yapıyor. Elleri yavaş. Duvardaki fiyatlara bakıyor.
Ana puts two cheese rolls in a bag. She makes the coffee. Her hands are slow. She looks at the prices on the wall.
