„Z piekarni” — mówi Ana. — „Z tylnego schodka. Rano nie ma chleba. Jest tylko torba. Taka”.
“From the bakery,” Ana says. “From the back step. In the morning, the bread isn’t there. Only the bag. Like this.”
Priya podnosi papierowy kwadrat. Patrzy na niego. Potem kładzie go na dłoń Any i zamyka na nim jej palce.
Priya picks up the paper square. She looks at it. Then she puts it in Ana’s hand and closes Ana’s fingers on it.
„Trzymaj to w kieszeni, moja droga” — mówi. — „I nie pokazuj tego Walterowi. Proszę”.
“Keep it in your pocket, my dear,” she says. “And don’t show it to Walter. Please.”
„Dlaczego? Kto bierze chleb? Czy wiesz?”
“Why? Who takes the bread? Do you know?”
Priya znowu się uśmiecha, ale to nie jest prawdziwy uśmiech. „Twoje ciasto, Ana. Nie zapomnij o cieście”. I zaczyna mówić o pogodzie.
Priya smiles again, but it is not a real smile. “Your cake, Ana. Don’t forget your cake.” And she starts to talk about the weather.
Tej nocy, o trzeciej godzinie, Ana znowu jest w piekarni. Torba znowu leży na tylnym schodku. Walter o tym nie mówi. Ana nie pyta.
That night, at three o’clock, Ana is in the bakery again. The bag is on the back step again. Walter doesn’t talk about it. Ana doesn’t ask.
Za dwadzieścia piąta Walter mówi: „Dzisiaj ty sprzedajesz. Ja pracuję przy piecu. Bułki są po funt pięćdziesiąt. Kawa po funt osiemdziesiąt. Herbata po funt dwadzieścia. Ceny są na ścianie”.
At twenty to five, Walter says, “Today you sell. I’m busy with the oven. Rolls are one pound fifty. Coffee is one pound eighty. Tea is one pound twenty. The prices are on the wall.”
„Ja sprzedaję? Sama?”
“I sell? Alone?”
„Sama. Umiesz liczyć, prawda?”
“Alone. You can count, can’t you?”
Za dziesięć piąta duży, zielony autobus staje przed sklepem. Z przodu autobusu jest numer: N7. Kierowca wysiada. Wchodzi do sklepu. Dzwonek nad drzwiami dzwoni.
At ten to five, a big green bus stops outside. On the front of the bus, there is a number: N7. The driver gets off. He comes into the shop. The bell over the door rings.
Jest wysoki, ma krótką brodę i wełnianą czapkę. Ma żółtą kurtkę. „Dzień dobry!” — mówi. Potem się zatrzymuje. „Nie jesteś Walterem”.
He is tall, with a short beard and a woolly hat. He has a yellow jacket. “Good morning!” he says. Then he stops. “You’re not Walter.”
„Nie. Jestem Ana. Jestem nową nocną piekarką”.
“No. I’m Ana. I’m the new night baker.”
„To dobrze! Walter nie jest miły o piątej rano” — mówi i się śmieje. — „Jestem Daniel. Prowadzę nocny autobus. Każdego ranka chcę dwie bułki z serem i kawę. Każdego ranka to samo”.
“Good! Walter isn’t nice at five in the morning,” he says, and he laughs. “I’m Daniel. I drive the night bus. Every morning, I want two cheese rolls and a coffee. Every morning, the same.”
Ana wkłada dwie bułki z serem do torby. Robi kawę. Jej ręce są wolne. Patrzy na ceny na ścianie.
Ana puts two cheese rolls in a bag. She makes the coffee. Her hands are slow. She looks at the prices on the wall.
