Opening the reader…
Daniel kahvesini bırakıyor. “Tamam. Otobüsüm geldi. Yarın görüşürüz, Ana. Güle güle, Walter.” Kapının üstündeki zil çalıyor. Daniel gidiyor.
Daniel puts down his coffee. “Right. My bus. See you tomorrow, Ana. Bye, Walter.” The bell over the door rings, and he is gone.
Walter ekmek tepsisini tezgaha koyuyor. Sert koyuyor. Sonra Ana’ya bakıyor.
Walter puts the tray of bread on the counter. He puts it down hard. Then he looks at Ana.
“Beni dinle,” diyor. “O çanta hakkında konuşmuyoruz. Daniel ile değil. Priya ile değil. Jess ile değil. Hiç kimse ile değil. Anlıyor musun?”
“Listen to me,” he says. “We don’t talk about that bag. Not with Daniel. Not with Priya. Not with Jess. Not with anybody. Do you understand?”
“Evet,” diyor Ana. “Anlıyorum.”
“Yes,” Ana says. “I understand.”
Ama anlamıyor. Walter bütün sabah ona bir kelime daha söylemiyor.
But she doesn’t understand. And all morning, Walter doesn’t say one more word to her.
Sonraki gece soğuk ve gri. Saat üçte Walter büyük somunlar için hamur yapıyor. Hamuru masaya koyuyor. Sonra somunları yuvarlak yapmaya çalışıyor.
The next night is cold and grey. At three o’clock, Walter makes the dough for the big loaves. He puts it on the table. Then he tries to make the loaves round.
Elleri titriyor. Bu gece çok titriyor. Hamur yuvarlak değil. Hiçbir şeye benzemiyor. Walter tekrar deniyor. Ve tekrar.
His hands shake. Tonight they shake a lot. The dough isn’t round. It isn’t anything. Walter tries again. And again.
Sonra eliyle masaya vuruyor. Crumb yerden kalkıyor. Arka kapıya gidiyor.
Then he hits the table with his hand. Crumb gets up from the floor and goes to the back door.
“Walter? Yardım edeyim mi?” diye soruyor Ana.
“Walter? Can I help?” Ana asks.
Walter uzun zaman cevap vermiyor. Ellerine bakıyor. Sonra çok sessizce söylüyor: “Sen yap.”
For a long time, Walter doesn’t answer. He looks at his hands. Then he says, very quietly, “You do it.”
“Ben mi? Büyük somunları mı?”
“Me? The big loaves?”
“Sen. Sana yolu söylüyorum. Elinin bu kısmı ile bas. Çevir. Tekrar bas. Hamurdan korkma.”
“You. I can tell you how. Push with this part of your hand. Turn it. Push again. Don’t be afraid of the dough.”
Ana ellerini hamura koyuyor. İlk somunu kötü oluyor. Bir şapkaya benziyor. İkinci somunu da kötü oluyor. Bir ayakkabıya benziyor.
Ana puts her hands on the dough. Her first loaf is bad. It looks like a hat. Her second loaf is bad too. It looks like a shoe.
“Bir ayakkabı,” diyor Walter. “Çok iyi. İnsanlar kahvaltıda ayakkabı yiyor.”
“A shoe,” Walter says. “Very good. People can eat shoes for breakfast.”
