Walter takes the sign from Ana’s hands. He doesn’t look at it. He puts it back behind the flour, in the dark. Then he takes the long tool from the box.
«La puerta», dice él. Y terminan la puerta. A las nueve en punto, cierra otra vez. Walter da las buenas noches y va arriba. No dice nada sobre el cartel.
“The door,” he says. And they finish the door. At nine o’clock, it closes again. Walter says good night and goes upstairs. He doesn’t say anything about the sign.
«Ana. Mañana es el cumpleaños del abuelo. Tiene setenta y dos años. ¿Puedes ayudarme? Quiero hacer un pastel».
On Friday, Jess comes into the kitchen after school. She speaks very quietly. “Ana. Tomorrow is Grandad’s birthday. He is seventy-two. Can you help me? I want to make a cake.”
«¿Un pastel de cumpleaños? ¡Sí! Pero Walter está en la panadería. Puede vernos».
“A birthday cake? Yes! But Walter is in the bakery. He can see us.”
«No el sábado por la tarde. El sábado por la tarde, él siempre sube la colina. Con la abuela Mary».
“Not on Saturday afternoon. On Saturday afternoon, he always goes up the hill. To Grandma Mary.”
El sábado por la tarde, Walter sale. Ana y Jess empiezan el pastel. Tienen harina, huevos, azúcar, mantequilla y chocolate. No es un buen pastel. El primer pastel está negro por abajo. El segundo pastel es muy plano.
On Saturday afternoon, Walter goes out. Ana and Jess start the cake. They have flour, eggs, sugar, butter and chocolate. It isn’t a good cake. The first cake is black at the bottom. The second cake is very flat.
«Trabajamos en una panadería», dice Jess, «y no podemos hacer un pastel». Tienen mucha risa. Hay chocolate en la pared.
“We work in a bakery,” Jess says, “and we can’t make a cake.” They laugh a lot. There is chocolate on the wall.
El tercer pastel está bien. Arriba, Jess escribe con chocolate blanco: FELIZ CUMPLEAÑOS, ABUELO. Las letras no están muy rectas.
The third cake is OK. On top, Jess writes in white chocolate: HAPPY BIRTHDAY GRANDAD. The letters are not very straight.
Dice BELL & SON. ¿Quién es el hijo?».
The cake is in the oven. Ana asks, “Jess, there is an old sign in the store room. It says BELL & SON. Who is the son?”
Jess para. Su cara se pone fría. «No hay hijo. El abuelo tiene una nieta. Yo. Eso es todo».
Jess stops. Her face goes cold. “There is no son. Grandad has a granddaughter. Me. That’s all.”
«Pero el cartel…».
“But the sign…”
«Ana. Por favor. Hoy no». Y Ana no pregunta otra vez.
“Ana. Please. Not today.” And Ana doesn’t ask again.
A las cinco en punto, Walter vuelve. Priya está allí, y Daniel también. Jess apaga la luz. «¡Feliz cumpleaños!», dicen todos. Ana trae el pastel.
At five o’clock, Walter comes back. Priya is there, and Daniel too. Jess turns off the light. “Happy birthday!” they all say. Ana brings the cake.
Walter mira el pastel. Mira las letras. «¿Quién hace este pastel? Es terrible», dice él. Pero come dos trozos grandes. Y sus ojos están alegres.
Walter looks at the cake. He looks at the letters. “Who makes this cake? It’s terrible,” he says. But he eats two big pieces. And his eyes are happy.
