Buon compleanno, Walter

Walter prende il cartello dalle mani di Ana. Non lo guarda. Lo mette di nuovo dietro la farina, al buio. Poi prende lo strumento lungo dalla scatola.

Walter takes the sign from Ana’s hands. He doesn’t look at it. He puts it back behind the flour, in the dark. Then he takes the long tool from the box.

«La porta», dice. E finiscono la porta. Alle nove, si chiude di nuovo. Walter dice buonanotte e va di sopra. Non dice niente sul cartello.

“The door,” he says. And they finish the door. At nine o’clock, it closes again. Walter says good night and goes upstairs. He doesn’t say anything about the sign.

Venerdì, Jess entra in cucina dopo la scuola. Parla a voce molto bassa. «Ana. Domani è il compleanno del nonno. Ha settantadue anni. Mi puoi aiutare? Voglio fare una torta.»

On Friday, Jess comes into the kitchen after school. She speaks very quietly. “Ana. Tomorrow is Grandad’s birthday. He is seventy-two. Can you help me? I want to make a cake.”

«Una torta di compleanno? Sì! Ma Walter è nella panetteria. Ci può vedere.»

“A birthday cake? Yes! But Walter is in the bakery. He can see us.”

«Non sabato pomeriggio. Sabato pomeriggio va sempre su per la collina. Da nonna Mary.»

“Not on Saturday afternoon. On Saturday afternoon, he always goes up the hill. To Grandma Mary.”

Sabato pomeriggio, Walter esce. Ana e Jess cominciano la torta. Hanno farina, uova, zucchero, burro e cioccolato. Non è una torta buona. La prima torta è nera sul fondo. La seconda torta è molto piatta.

On Saturday afternoon, Walter goes out. Ana and Jess start the cake. They have flour, eggs, sugar, butter and chocolate. It isn’t a good cake. The first cake is black at the bottom. The second cake is very flat.

«Lavoriamo in una panetteria», dice Jess, «e non possiamo fare una torta.» Ridono molto. C’è cioccolato sul muro.

“We work in a bakery,” Jess says, “and we can’t make a cake.” They laugh a lot. There is chocolate on the wall.

La terza torta va bene. Sopra, Jess scrive con il cioccolato bianco: BUON COMPLEANNO NONNO. Le lettere non sono molto dritte.

The third cake is OK. On top, Jess writes in white chocolate: HAPPY BIRTHDAY GRANDAD. The letters are not very straight.

La torta è nel forno. Ana chiede: «Jess, c’è un vecchio cartello nel ripostiglio. Dice BELL & SON. Chi è il figlio?»

The cake is in the oven. Ana asks, “Jess, there is an old sign in the store room. It says BELL & SON. Who is the son?”

Jess si ferma. Il suo viso diventa freddo. «Non c’è nessun figlio. Il nonno ha una nipote. Me. Tutto qui.»

Jess stops. Her face goes cold. “There is no son. Grandad has a granddaughter. Me. That’s all.”

«Ma il cartello…»

“But the sign…”

«Ana. Per favore. Non oggi.» E Ana non chiede di nuovo.

“Ana. Please. Not today.” And Ana doesn’t ask again.

Alle cinque, Walter torna. Priya è lì, e anche Daniel. Jess spegne la luce. «Buon compleanno!», dicono tutti. Ana porta la torta.

At five o’clock, Walter comes back. Priya is there, and Daniel too. Jess turns off the light. “Happy birthday!” they all say. Ana brings the cake.

Walter guarda la torta. Guarda le lettere. «Chi fa questa torta? È terribile», dice. Ma mangia due pezzi grandi. E i suoi occhi sono felici.

Walter looks at the cake. He looks at the letters. “Who makes this cake? It’s terrible,” he says. But he eats two big pieces. And his eyes are happy.
