Walter takes the sign from Ana’s hands. He doesn’t look at it. He puts it back behind the flour, in the dark. Then he takes the long tool from the box.
“A porta”, ele diz. E eles acabam a porta.
“The door,” he says. And they finish the door. At nine o’clock, it closes again. Walter says good night and goes upstairs. He doesn’t say anything about the sign.
“Ana. Amanhã é aniversário do Vovô. Ele tem setenta e dois anos. Você pode me ajudar? Quero fazer um bolo.”
On Friday, Jess comes into the kitchen after school. She speaks very quietly. “Ana. Tomorrow is Grandad’s birthday. He is seventy-two. Can you help me? I want to make a cake.”
“Um bolo de aniversário? Sim! Mas o Walter está na padaria. Ele pode ver a gente.”
“A birthday cake? Yes! But Walter is in the bakery. He can see us.”
“No sábado à tarde não. No sábado à tarde, ele sempre sobe a colina. Vai ver a Vovó Mary.”
“Not on Saturday afternoon. On Saturday afternoon, he always goes up the hill. To Grandma Mary.”
No sábado à tarde, Walter sai. Ana e Jess começam o bolo. Elas têm farinha, ovos, açúcar, manteiga e chocolate. Não é um bolo bom. O primeiro bolo fica preto embaixo. O segundo bolo fica muito baixo.
On Saturday afternoon, Walter goes out. Ana and Jess start the cake. They have flour, eggs, sugar, butter and chocolate. It isn’t a good cake. The first cake is black at the bottom. The second cake is very flat.
“A gente trabalha numa padaria”, Jess diz, “e não pode fazer um bolo.” Elas riem muito. Tem chocolate na parede.
“We work in a bakery,” Jess says, “and we can’t make a cake.” They laugh a lot. There is chocolate on the wall.
O terceiro bolo fica bom.
The third cake is OK. On top, Jess writes in white chocolate: HAPPY BIRTHDAY GRANDAD. The letters are not very straight.
Diz BELL & SON. Quem é o filho?”
The cake is in the oven. Ana asks, “Jess, there is an old sign in the store room. It says BELL & SON. Who is the son?”
Jess para. O rosto dela fica frio. “Não tem filho. Vovô tem uma neta. Eu. Só isso.”
Jess stops. Her face goes cold. “There is no son. Grandad has a granddaughter. Me. That’s all.”
“Mas a placa…”
“But the sign…”
“Ana. Por favor. Hoje não.” E Ana não pergunta de novo.
“Ana. Please. Not today.” And Ana doesn’t ask again.
Às cinco horas, Walter volta. Priya está lá, e Daniel também. Jess apaga a luz. “Feliz aniversário!”, todos dizem. Ana traz o bolo.
At five o’clock, Walter comes back. Priya is there, and Daniel too. Jess turns off the light. “Happy birthday!” they all say. Ana brings the cake.
Walter olha para o bolo. Ele olha para as letras. “Quem faz esse bolo? É terrível”, ele diz. Mas ele come dois pedaços grandes. E os olhos dele ficam felizes.
Walter looks at the cake. He looks at the letters. “Who makes this cake? It’s terrible,” he says. But he eats two big pieces. And his eyes are happy.
