Walter takes the sign from Ana’s hands. He doesn’t look at it. He puts it back behind the flour, in the dark. Then he takes the long tool from the box.
« La porte », dit-il. Et ils finissent la porte. À neuf heures, elle se ferme encore. Walter dit bonne nuit et monte. Il ne dit rien sur le panneau.
“The door,” he says. And they finish the door. At nine o’clock, it closes again. Walter says good night and goes upstairs. He doesn’t say anything about the sign.
« Ana. Demain, c’est l’anniversaire de Papy. Il a soixante-douze ans. Est-ce que tu peux m’aider ? Je veux faire un gâteau. »
On Friday, Jess comes into the kitchen after school. She speaks very quietly. “Ana. Tomorrow is Grandad’s birthday. He is seventy-two. Can you help me? I want to make a cake.”
« Un gâteau d’anniversaire ? Oui ! Mais Walter est dans la boulangerie. Il peut nous voir. »
“A birthday cake? Yes! But Walter is in the bakery. He can see us.”
« Pas le samedi après-midi. Le samedi après-midi, il monte toujours sur la colline. Chez Mamie Mary. »
“Not on Saturday afternoon. On Saturday afternoon, he always goes up the hill. To Grandma Mary.”
On Saturday afternoon, Walter goes out. Ana and Jess start the cake. They have flour, eggs, sugar, butter and chocolate. It isn’t a good cake. The first cake is black at the bottom. The second cake is very flat.
« On travaille dans une boulangerie », dit Jess, « et on ne peut pas faire un gâteau. » Elles rient beaucoup. Il y a du chocolat sur le mur.
“We work in a bakery,” Jess says, “and we can’t make a cake.” They laugh a lot. There is chocolate on the wall.
Le troisième gâteau est bon. En haut, Jess écrit en chocolat blanc : BON ANNIVERSAIRE PAPY. Les lettres ne sont pas très droites.
The third cake is OK. On top, Jess writes in white chocolate: HAPPY BIRTHDAY GRANDAD. The letters are not very straight.
The cake is in the oven. Ana asks, “Jess, there is an old sign in the store room. It says BELL & SON. Who is the son?”
Jess s’arrête. Son visage devient froid. « Il n’y a pas de fils. Papy a une petite-fille. Moi. C’est tout. »
Jess stops. Her face goes cold. “There is no son. Grandad has a granddaughter. Me. That’s all.”
« Mais le panneau… »
“But the sign…”
« Ana. S’il te plaît. Pas aujourd’hui. » Et Ana ne demande plus rien.
“Ana. Please. Not today.” And Ana doesn’t ask again.
À cinq heures, Walter revient. Priya est là, et Daniel aussi. Jess éteint la lumière. « Bon anniversaire ! » disent-ils tous. Ana apporte le gâteau.
At five o’clock, Walter comes back. Priya is there, and Daniel too. Jess turns off the light. “Happy birthday!” they all say. Ana brings the cake.
Walter regarde le gâteau. Il regarde les lettres. « Qui fait ce gâteau ? C’est terrible », dit-il. Mais il mange deux grands morceaux. Et ses yeux sont heureux.
Walter looks at the cake. He looks at the letters. “Who makes this cake? It’s terrible,” he says. But he eats two big pieces. And his eyes are happy.
