Walter takes the sign from Ana’s hands. He doesn’t look at it. He puts it back behind the flour, in the dark. Then he takes the long tool from the box.
“Cái cửa,” ông nói. Và hai người làm xong cái cửa. Vào lúc chín giờ, cửa đóng lại. Walter chúc ngủ ngon và đi lên gác. Ông không nói gì về tấm biển.
“The door,” he says. And they finish the door. At nine o’clock, it closes again. Walter says good night and goes upstairs. He doesn’t say anything about the sign.
“Ana. Ngày mai là sinh nhật ông. Ông bảy mươi hai tuổi. Cậu giúp tớ được không? Tớ muốn làm một cái bánh.”
On Friday, Jess comes into the kitchen after school. She speaks very quietly. “Ana. Tomorrow is Grandad’s birthday. He is seventy-two. Can you help me? I want to make a cake.”
“Bánh sinh nhật à? Được chứ! Nhưng Walter ở trong tiệm bánh. Ông nhìn thấy chúng mình.”
“A birthday cake? Yes! But Walter is in the bakery. He can see us.”
“Chiều thứ Bảy thì không. Vào chiều thứ Bảy, ông luôn luôn đi lên đồi. Đến chỗ bà Mary.”
“Not on Saturday afternoon. On Saturday afternoon, he always goes up the hill. To Grandma Mary.”
On Saturday afternoon, Walter goes out. Ana and Jess start the cake. They have flour, eggs, sugar, butter and chocolate. It isn’t a good cake. The first cake is black at the bottom. The second cake is very flat.
“Chúng mình làm việc ở tiệm bánh,” Jess nói, “và chúng mình không làm được một cái bánh.” Họ cười rất nhiều. Có sô-cô-la ở trên tường.
“We work in a bakery,” Jess says, “and we can’t make a cake.” They laugh a lot. There is chocolate on the wall.
The third cake is OK. On top, Jess writes in white chocolate: HAPPY BIRTHDAY GRANDAD. The letters are not very straight.
The cake is in the oven. Ana asks, “Jess, there is an old sign in the store room. It says BELL & SON. Who is the son?”
Jess dừng lại. Mặt cậu ấy lạnh đi. “Không có người con trai nào cả. Ông có một người cháu gái. Là tớ. Chỉ có vậy.”
Jess stops. Her face goes cold. “There is no son. Grandad has a granddaughter. Me. That’s all.”
“Nhưng tấm biển…”
“But the sign…”
“Ana. Xin cậu. Đừng phải hôm nay.” Và Ana không hỏi lại nữa.
“Ana. Please. Not today.” And Ana doesn’t ask again.
Vào lúc năm giờ, Walter quay về. Priya ở đó, và Daniel cũng ở đó. Jess tắt đèn. “Chúc mừng sinh nhật!” tất cả mọi người nói. Ana mang bánh ra.
At five o’clock, Walter comes back. Priya is there, and Daniel too. Jess turns off the light. “Happy birthday!” they all say. Ana brings the cake.
Walter nhìn cái bánh. Ông nhìn những chữ cái. “Ai làm cái bánh này? Dở tệ,” ông nói. Nhưng ông ăn hai miếng to. Và mắt ông rất vui.
Walter looks at the cake. He looks at the letters. “Who makes this cake? It’s terrible,” he says. But he eats two big pieces. And his eyes are happy.
