Walter bierze tabliczkę z rąk Any. Nie patrzy na nią. Kładzie ją z powrotem za mąkę, w ciemność. Potem bierze z pudełka długie narzędzie.
Walter takes the sign from Ana’s hands. He doesn’t look at it. He puts it back behind the flour, in the dark. Then he takes the long tool from the box.
„Drzwi” – mówi. I kończą drzwi. O dziewiątej znowu się zamykają. Walter mówi „dobranoc” i idzie na górę. Nie mówi nic o tabliczce.
“The door,” he says. And they finish the door. At nine o’clock, it closes again. Walter says good night and goes upstairs. He doesn’t say anything about the sign.
W piątek po szkole Jess wchodzi do kuchni. Mówi bardzo cicho. „Ana. Jutro są urodziny dziadka. Ma siedemdziesiąt dwa lata. Czy możesz mi pomóc? Chcę zrobić ciasto”.
On Friday, Jess comes into the kitchen after school. She speaks very quietly. “Ana. Tomorrow is Grandad’s birthday. He is seventy-two. Can you help me? I want to make a cake.”
„Tort urodzinowy? Tak! Ale Walter jest w piekarni. Może nas zobaczyć”.
“A birthday cake? Yes! But Walter is in the bakery. He can see us.”
„Nie w sobotę po południu. W sobotę po południu zawsze idzie na wzgórze. Do babci Mary”.
“Not on Saturday afternoon. On Saturday afternoon, he always goes up the hill. To Grandma Mary.”
W sobotę po południu Walter wychodzi. Ana i Jess zaczynają ciasto. Mają mąkę, jajka, cukier, masło i czekoladę. To nie jest dobre ciasto. Pierwsze ciasto jest czarne na dole. Drugie ciasto jest bardzo płaskie.
On Saturday afternoon, Walter goes out. Ana and Jess start the cake. They have flour, eggs, sugar, butter and chocolate. It isn’t a good cake. The first cake is black at the bottom. The second cake is very flat.
„Pracujemy w piekarni – mówi Jess – i nie umiemy zrobić ciasta”. Dużo się śmieją. Na ścianie jest czekolada.
“We work in a bakery,” Jess says, “and we can’t make a cake.” They laugh a lot. There is chocolate on the wall.
Trzecie ciasto jest dobre. Na górze Jess pisze białą czekoladą: WSZYSTKIEGO NAJLEPSZEGO DZIADKU. Litery nie są zbyt proste.
The third cake is OK. On top, Jess writes in white chocolate: HAPPY BIRTHDAY GRANDAD. The letters are not very straight.
Ciasto jest w piekarniku. Ana pyta: „Jess, w magazynie jest stara tabliczka. Jest tam napisane BELL & SON. Kto to jest syn?”.
The cake is in the oven. Ana asks, “Jess, there is an old sign in the store room. It says BELL & SON. Who is the son?”
Jess zatrzymuje się. Jej twarz robi się zimna. „Nie ma syna. Dziadek ma wnuczkę. Mnie. To wszystko”.
Jess stops. Her face goes cold. “There is no son. Grandad has a granddaughter. Me. That’s all.”
„Ale tabliczka…”
“But the sign…”
„Ana. Proszę. Nie dzisiaj”. I Ana już nie pyta.
“Ana. Please. Not today.” And Ana doesn’t ask again.
O piątej Walter wraca. Jest tam Priya, jest też Daniel. Jess gasi światło. „Wszystkiego najlepszego!” – mówią wszyscy. Ana przynosi ciasto.
At five o’clock, Walter comes back. Priya is there, and Daniel too. Jess turns off the light. “Happy birthday!” they all say. Ana brings the cake.
Walter patrzy na ciasto. Patrzy na litery. „Kto robi to ciasto? Jest straszne” – mówi. Ale zjada dwa duże kawałki. I ma wesołe oczy.
Walter looks at the cake. He looks at the letters. “Who makes this cake? It’s terrible,” he says. But he eats two big pieces. And his eyes are happy.
