Kenji woont in Tokio.
Kenji lives in Tokyo. He is thirty-eight. He works in a big office in the city.
Kenji is een rustige man.
Kenji is a quiet man. He comes to work at eight. He goes home at seven. He does not talk much.
Zijn bureau staat naast het raam. Hij vindt zijn werk leuk. “Een goed team,” denkt hij.
His desk is next to the window. He likes his job. “A good team,” he thinks.
Op maandagochtend heeft het team een vergadering. De baas is er niet. Iedereen praat met een zachte stem.
On Monday morning, the team has a meeting. The boss is not there. Everybody talks in a quiet voice.
“Vrijdag is de verjaardag van de baas,” zegt een vrouw uit het team. “Hij wordt vijftig. We willen een cadeau kopen.”
“Friday is the boss’s birthday,” says a woman from the team. “He is fifty. We want to buy a present.”
“Een goed cadeau,” zegt een jonge man. “Een mooie pen. Of een horloge.”
“A good present,” says a young man. “A nice pen. Or a watch.”
“Iedereen doet drieduizend yen in een envelop,” zegt de vrouw. “Goed?”
“Everybody puts three thousand yen in an envelope,” says the woman. “OK?”
“Goed,” zegt iedereen. Kenji zegt ook “goed”, heel zacht.
“OK,” says everybody. Kenji says “OK” too, very quietly.
“Alsjeblieft, Kenji,” zegt de jonge man. “Voor de envelop.”
In the afternoon, people come to Kenji’s desk. They give him money. “Here, Kenji,” says the young man. “For the envelope.”
“Waarom ik?” vraagt Kenji.
“Why me?” asks Kenji.
“Omdat je voorzichtig bent,” zegt de vrouw. “Je raakt nooit iets kwijt.”
“Because you are careful,” says the woman. “You never lose anything.”
Kenji Tanaka, Verkoopteam.”
Kenji looks at the envelope. It is white. On the front, he writes: “For the boss. Kenji Tanaka, Sales Team.”
Om zes uur telt hij het geld. “Tien mensen, drieduizend yen. Dertigduizend yen.”
At six o’clock, he counts the money. “Ten people, three thousand yen. Thirty thousand yen.”
