Treizeci de mii de yeni
Thirty thousand yen
Kenji locuiește în Tokyo. El are treizeci și opt de ani. Lucrează într-un birou mare din oraș.
Kenji lives in Tokyo. He is thirty-eight. He works in a big office in the city.
Kenji este un bărbat liniștit. Vine la muncă la ora opt. Pleacă acasă la ora șapte. Nu vorbește mult.
Kenji is a quiet man. He comes to work at eight. He goes home at seven. He does not talk much.
Biroul lui este lângă fereastră. Îi place munca lui. „O echipă bună”, se gândește el.
His desk is next to the window. He likes his job. “A good team,” he thinks.
Luni dimineața, echipa are o ședință. Șeful nu este acolo. Toți vorbesc cu voce joasă.
On Monday morning, the team has a meeting. The boss is not there. Everybody talks in a quiet voice.
„Vineri este ziua de naștere a șefului”, spune o femeie din echipă. „El împlinește cincizeci de ani. Vrem să cumpărăm un cadou.”
“Friday is the boss’s birthday,” says a woman from the team. “He is fifty. We want to buy a present.”
„Un cadou bun”, spune un tânăr. „Un stilou frumos. Sau un ceas.”
“A good present,” says a young man. “A nice pen. Or a watch.”
„Fiecare pune trei mii de yeni într-un plic”, spune femeia. „De acord?”
“Everybody puts three thousand yen in an envelope,” says the woman. “OK?”
„De acord”, spun toți. Kenji spune și el „de acord”, foarte încet.
“OK,” says everybody. Kenji says “OK” too, very quietly.
După-amiază, colegii vin la biroul lui Kenji. Ei îi dau bani. „Poftim, Kenji”, spune tânărul. „Pentru plic.”
In the afternoon, people come to Kenji’s desk. They give him money. “Here, Kenji,” says the young man. “For the envelope.”
„De ce eu?”, întreabă Kenji.
“Why me?” asks Kenji.
„Pentru că ești atent”, spune femeia. „Nu pierzi niciodată nimic.”
“Because you are careful,” says the woman. “You never lose anything.”
Kenji se uită la plic. Este alb. Pe față, el scrie: „Pentru șef. Kenji Tanaka, Echipa de vânzări.”
Kenji looks at the envelope. It is white. On the front, he writes: “For the boss. Kenji Tanaka, Sales Team.”
La ora șase, el numără banii. „Zece oameni, trei mii de yeni. Treizeci de mii de yeni.”
At six o’clock, he counts the money. “Ten people, three thousand yen. Thirty thousand yen.”
