On Monday morning, the team has a meeting. The boss is not there. Everybody talks in a quiet voice.
“Cuma günü patronun doğum günü,” diyor ekipten bir kadın. “Patron elli yaşında. Biz bir hediye almak istiyoruz.”
“Friday is the boss’s birthday,” says a woman from the team. “He is fifty. We want to buy a present.”
“İyi bir hediye,” diyor genç bir adam. “Güzel bir kalem. Veya bir saat.”
“A good present,” says a young man. “A nice pen. Or a watch.”
“Herkes bir zarfa üç bin yen koyuyor,” diyor kadın. “Tamam mı?”
“Everybody puts three thousand yen in an envelope,” says the woman. “OK?”
“Tamam,” diyor herkes. Kenji de çok sessizce “Tamam,” diyor.
“OK,” says everybody. Kenji says “OK” too, very quietly.
Öğleden sonra insanlar Kenji’nin masasına geliyor. Ona para veriyorlar. “Al, Kenji,” diyor genç adam. “Zarf için.”
In the afternoon, people come to Kenji’s desk. They give him money. “Here, Kenji,” says the young man. “For the envelope.”
“Neden ben?” diye soruyor Kenji.
“Why me?” asks Kenji.
“Çünkü sen dikkatlisin,” diyor kadın. “Hiçbir şey kaybetmiyorsun.”
“Because you are careful,” says the woman. “You never lose anything.”
Kenji zarfa bakıyor. Zarf beyaz. Önüne yazıyor: “Patron için. Kenji Tanaka, Satış Ekibi.”
Kenji looks at the envelope. It is white. On the front, he writes: “For the boss. Kenji Tanaka, Sales Team.”
Saat altıda parayı sayıyor. “On kişi, üç bin yen. Otuz bin yen.”
At six o’clock, he counts the money. “Ten people, three thousand yen. Thirty thousand yen.”
