Kenji is a quiet man. He comes to work at eight. He goes home at seven. He does not talk much.
A mesa dele fica perto da janela. Ele gosta do trabalho dele. “Uma boa equipe”, ele pensa.
His desk is next to the window. He likes his job. “A good team,” he thinks.
Na segunda-feira de manhã, a equipe tem uma reunião. O chefe não está lá. Todo mundo fala com voz baixa.
On Monday morning, the team has a meeting. The boss is not there. Everybody talks in a quiet voice.
“Sexta-feira é o aniversário do chefe”, diz uma mulher da equipe. “Ele faz cinquenta anos. Nós queremos comprar um presente.”
“Friday is the boss’s birthday,” says a woman from the team. “He is fifty. We want to buy a present.”
“Um bom presente”, diz um homem jovem. “Uma caneta bonita. Ou um relógio.”
“A good present,” says a young man. “A nice pen. Or a watch.”
“Todo mundo coloca três mil ienes em um envelope”, diz a mulher. “Tudo bem?”
“Everybody puts three thousand yen in an envelope,” says the woman. “OK?”
“Tudo bem”, diz todo mundo. Kenji também diz “tudo bem”, bem baixinho.
“OK,” says everybody. Kenji says “OK” too, very quietly.
À tarde, as pessoas vão até a mesa do Kenji. Elas dão dinheiro para ele. “Aqui, Kenji”, diz o jovem. “Para o envelope.”
In the afternoon, people come to Kenji’s desk. They give him money. “Here, Kenji,” says the young man. “For the envelope.”
“Por que eu?”, pergunta Kenji.
“Why me?” asks Kenji.
“Porque você é cuidadoso”, diz a mulher. “Você nunca perde nada.”
“Because you are careful,” says the woman. “You never lose anything.”
Kenji olha para o envelope. Ele é branco. Na frente, ele escreve: “Para o chefe. Kenji Tanaka, Equipe de Vendas.”
Kenji looks at the envelope. It is white. On the front, he writes: “For the boss. Kenji Tanaka, Sales Team.”
Às seis horas, ele conta o dinheiro. “Dez pessoas, três mil ienes. Trinta mil ienes.”
At six o’clock, he counts the money. “Ten people, three thousand yen. Thirty thousand yen.”
