Makan siang hari Minggu
Sunday lunch
Nick berumur tiga puluh empat tahun. Dia membuat aplikasi untuk ponsel. Dia bekerja di sebuah kantor di pusat kota Melbourne. Dia melihat layar sepanjang hari.
Nick was thirty-four. He made apps for phones. He worked in an office in the centre of Melbourne. He looked at a screen all day.
Setiap hari Minggu, dia makan siang bersama kakeknya, Stavros. Nick memanggilnya Pappou. Itu kata bahasa Yunani untuk kakek.
Every Sunday, he had lunch with his grandfather, Stavros. Nick called him Pappou. It was the Greek word for grandfather.
Pappou berumur delapan puluh enam tahun.
Pappou was eighty-six. He lived alone in a small house in Brunswick. He cooked chicken with potatoes every Sunday. It was always the same lunch, and it was always good.
Hari Minggu ini, Pappou tidak makan banyak. Dia memegang sebuah foto lama di tangannya.
This Sunday, Pappou didn’t eat much. He had an old photo in his hand.
“Lihat,” katanya. “Ini aku pada tahun 1965.”
“Look,” he said. “This is me in 1965.”
In the photo, a young man stood in front of a house. It had a green door. There was a small lemon tree next to the door. The young man had black hair and a big smile.
“Di mana ini?” tanya Nick.
“Where is this?” asked Nick.
“Lygon Street. Ini rumah tempat aku tinggal pada tahun pertamaku di Australia.”
“Lygon Street. It’s the house where I lived in my first year in Australia.”
“Kamu tidak pernah bercerita tentang rumah itu kepadaku.”
“You’ve never told me about that house.”
“Kamu tidak pernah bertanya.” Pappou tersenyum.
“You’ve never asked.” Pappou smiled.
Nick meletakkan ponselnya di atas meja. “Baiklah. Aku bertanya sekarang.”
Nick put his phone on the table. “OK. I’m asking now.”
“Aku datang dari Yunani naik kapal,” kata Pappou. “Tiga puluh satu hari di laut. Umurku dua puluh lima tahun, dan aku tidak bisa berbicara bahasa Inggris sama sekali. Aku membawa satu tas dan alamat seorang sepupu.”
“I came from Greece on a ship,” said Pappou. “Thirty-one days on the sea. I was twenty-five, and I didn’t speak a word of English. I had one bag and the address of a cousin.”
“Dan sepupumu tinggal di Lygon Street?”
“And your cousin lived on Lygon Street?”
