Niedzielny obiad
Sunday lunch
Nick miał trzydzieści cztery lata. Tworzył aplikacje na telefony. Pracował w biurze w centrum Melbourne. Cały dzień patrzył w ekran.
Nick was thirty-four. He made apps for phones. He worked in an office in the centre of Melbourne. He looked at a screen all day.
W każdą niedzielę jadł obiad ze swoim dziadkiem, Stavrosem. Nick mówił na niego Pappou. To było greckie słowo oznaczające dziadka.
Every Sunday, he had lunch with his grandfather, Stavros. Nick called him Pappou. It was the Greek word for grandfather.
Pappou miał osiemdziesiąt sześć lat. Mieszkał sam w małym domu w Brunswick. W każdą niedzielę gotował kurczaka z ziemniakami. To był zawsze ten sam obiad i zawsze był dobry.
Pappou was eighty-six. He lived alone in a small house in Brunswick. He cooked chicken with potatoes every Sunday. It was always the same lunch, and it was always good.
W tę niedzielę Pappou nie zjadł dużo. Miał w ręku stare zdjęcie.
This Sunday, Pappou didn’t eat much. He had an old photo in his hand.
„Popatrz” – powiedział. „To ja w 1965 roku”.
“Look,” he said. “This is me in 1965.”
Na zdjęciu młody mężczyzna stał przed domem. Dom miał zielone drzwi. Obok drzwi rosło małe drzewo cytrynowe. Młody mężczyzna miał czarne włosy i duży uśmiech.
In the photo, a young man stood in front of a house. It had a green door. There was a small lemon tree next to the door. The young man had black hair and a big smile.
„Gdzie to jest?” – zapytał Nick.
“Where is this?” asked Nick.
„Lygon Street. To dom, w którym mieszkałem w moim pierwszym roku w Australii”.
“Lygon Street. It’s the house where I lived in my first year in Australia.”
„Nigdy nie mówiłeś mi o tym domu”.
“You’ve never told me about that house.”
„Nigdy nie pytałeś”. Pappou uśmiechnął się.
“You’ve never asked.” Pappou smiled.
Nick położył telefon na stole. „Dobrze. Pytam teraz”.
Nick put his phone on the table. “OK. I’m asking now.”
„Przyjechałem z Grecji statkiem” – powiedział Pappou. „Trzydzieści jeden dni na morzu. Miałem dwadzieścia pięć lat i nie mówiłem ani słowa po angielsku. Miałem jedną torbę i adres kuzyna”.
“I came from Greece on a ship,” said Pappou. “Thirty-one days on the sea. I was twenty-five, and I didn’t speak a word of English. I had one bag and the address of a cousin.”
„A twój kuzyn mieszkał na Lygon Street?”
“And your cousin lived on Lygon Street?”
