Pazar öğle yemeği
Sunday lunch
Nick otuz dört yaşındaydı. Telefonlar için uygulamalar yapıyordu. Melbourne merkezinde bir ofiste çalışıyordu. Bütün gün bir ekrana bakıyordu.
Nick was thirty-four. He made apps for phones. He worked in an office in the centre of Melbourne. He looked at a screen all day.
Her pazar dedesi Stavros ile öğle yemeği yerdi. Nick ona Pappou derdi. Bu kelime, Yunanca dede demekti.
Every Sunday, he had lunch with his grandfather, Stavros. Nick called him Pappou. It was the Greek word for grandfather.
Pappou seksen altı yaşındaydı. Brunswick’te küçük bir evde yalnız yaşıyordu. Her pazar patatesli tavuk pişirirdi. Her zaman aynı öğle yemeğiydi ve her zaman güzeldi.
Pappou was eighty-six. He lived alone in a small house in Brunswick. He cooked chicken with potatoes every Sunday. It was always the same lunch, and it was always good.
Bu pazar Pappou çok yemedi. Elinde eski bir fotoğraf vardı.
This Sunday, Pappou didn’t eat much. He had an old photo in his hand.
“Bak,” dedi. “Bu benim, 1965 yılında.”
“Look,” he said. “This is me in 1965.”
Fotoğrafta, genç bir adam bir evin önünde duruyordu. Evin yeşil bir kapısı vardı. Kapının yanında küçük bir limon ağacı vardı. Genç adamın siyah saçları ve büyük bir gülümsemesi vardı.
In the photo, a young man stood in front of a house. It had a green door. There was a small lemon tree next to the door. The young man had black hair and a big smile.
“Burası neresi?” diye sordu Nick.
“Where is this?” asked Nick.
“Lygon Sokağı. Avustralya’daki ilk yılımda yaşadığım ev.”
“Lygon Street. It’s the house where I lived in my first year in Australia.”
“Bana o evi hiç anlatmadın.”
“You’ve never told me about that house.”
“Hiç sormadın.” Pappou gülümsedi.
“You’ve never asked.” Pappou smiled.
Nick telefonunu masaya koydu. “Tamam. Şimdi soruyorum.”
Nick put his phone on the table. “OK. I’m asking now.”
“Yunanistan’dan bir gemiyle geldim,” dedi Pappou. “Denizde otuz bir gün geçirdim. Yirmi beş yaşındaydım ve tek kelime İngilizce bilmiyordum. Bir çantam ve bir kuzenimin adresi vardı.”
“I came from Greece on a ship,” said Pappou. “Thirty-one days on the sea. I was twenty-five, and I didn’t speak a word of English. I had one bag and the address of a cousin.”
“Ve kuzenin Lygon Sokağı’nda mı yaşıyordu?”
“And your cousin lived on Lygon Street?”
