The King Who Talked Too Much
बहुत समय पहले, भारत में राजा ब्रह्मदत्त बनारस शहर पर राज करते थे। वह एक अच्छे राजा थे, पर उनकी एक बड़ी समस्या थी। वह बहुत ज़्यादा बोलते थे।
Long ago, King Brahmadatta ruled the city of Benares in India. He was a good king, but he had one big problem. He talked too much.
वह सुबह बात करते थे, और वह रात को बात करते थे। वह रात के खाने के समय और बगीचे में बात करते थे। जब दूसरे लोग बोलना चाहते थे, तो वह नहीं रुकते थे। कोई भी एक शब्द नहीं कह पाता था।
He talked in the morning, and he talked at night. He talked at dinner and in the garden. When other people wanted to speak, he did not stop. Nobody could say a word.
राजा का एक बुद्धिमान सलाहकार था। सलाहकार राजा को पसंद करता था और उसकी मदद करना चाहता था। पर वह एक राजा से कैसे कह सकता था, “आप बहुत ज़्यादा बोलते हैं”?
The king had a wise adviser. The adviser liked the king and wanted to help him. But how could he tell a king, “You talk too much”?
सलाहकार ने सोचा, “मुझे इंतज़ार करना चाहिए। एक दिन मुझे सही समय मिल जाएगा।”
“I must wait,” the adviser thought. “One day I will find the right moment.”
दूर, उत्तर के पहाड़ों में, एक छोटी झील थी। वहाँ एक कछुआ रहता था। वह एक दयालु कछुआ था, पर वह बिल्कुल राजा जैसा था। उसे बातें करना बहुत पसंद था।
Far away, in the mountains in the north, there was a little lake. A tortoise lived there. He was a kind tortoise, but he was very like the king. He loved talking.
वह मछलियों से और मेंढकों से बात करता था। वह पेड़ों से और पत्थरों से बात करता था। जब कोई सुन भी नहीं रहा होता था, तब भी वह बात करता था।
He talked to the fish and to the frogs. He talked to the trees and to the rocks. He even talked when nobody was listening.
हर वसंत में, दो जंगली कलहंस उड़कर उस झील पर आती थीं। वे बहनें थीं, और वे कछुए की अच्छी दोस्त थीं। कछुआ बात करता था, और कलहंस सुनती थीं। वे बहुत धैर्यवान थीं।
Every spring, two wild geese flew to the lake. They were sisters, and they were good friends of the tortoise. The tortoise talked, and the geese listened. They were very patient.
पर एक गर्मी में, उस छोटी झील के साथ कुछ बुरा हुआ।
But one summer, something bad happened to the little lake.
