Die Schatzinsel

Retold in easy German (B2) from the novel by Robert Louis Stevenson

Twelve-year-old Jim Hawkins helps out at his parents' inn when a seaman with a sabre scar moves in and brings a sea-chest with a deadly secret inside: the map of an island where Captain Flint buried his treasure. With the Squire, the doctor and a friendly one-legged ship's cook named Long John Silver, Jim sets sail. But not everyone aboard is what they seem, and inside the apple barrel he hears something he was never meant to hear. On the island a boy has to decide whom to trust and when to keep his word, even when it was given to a pirate. Robert Louis Stevenson's famous adventure novel, retold chapter by chapter for young readers.

Der alte Seebär im «Admiral Benbow»

The Old Sea-dog at the Admiral Benbow

Squire Trelawney and Dr. Livesey have asked me to write down the whole story of Treasure Island, from the first day to the last. Only the position of the island am I to keep quiet about, for there is still silver lying there that nobody has fetched. So I take up my pen and go far back, to the time when my father kept the “Admiral Benbow” inn and the old brown seaman with the sabre scar came to lodge with us.

I can still see him before me as if it were yesterday. He came tramping up the road, and behind him a handcart rumbled along with his sea-chest. He was tall, heavy and nut-brown, his tarry pigtail fell over the collar of a dirty blue coat, and across his cheek ran a sabre scar, pale as candle wax. I was twelve years old at the time, and I was just sweeping the doorstep.
