İki yıldır Hamburg’da küçük bir kitapçıda çalışıyorum. Adı “Seitenweise” ve eski kitaplar satıyor. Sahibi Bay Berger. 78 yaşında, her zaman yeşil bir ceket giyiyor ve her gün tam üç fincan çay içiyor.

I’ve been working in a small bookshop in Hamburg for two years. It’s called “Seitenweise” and sells old books. The owner is Mr Berger. He’s 78, always wears a green jacket, and drinks exactly three cups of tea every day.

Bu işi seviyorum. Sessiz, kağıt kokuyor ve bazen eski kitapların içinde bir şey buluyor insan: bir kartpostal, bir bilet, kurumuş bir çiçek.

I love this job. It’s quiet, it smells of paper, and sometimes you find something in the old books: a postcard, a ticket, a dried flower.

Ama salı günü başka bir şey buldum.

But on Tuesday I found something else.

Eski bir romanı rafa geri koydum. İçinden küçük bir kağıt düştü. Onu yerden aldım. Yazısı güzeldi, mavi mürekkeple:

I was putting an old novel back on the shelf. A small note fell out. I picked it up. The handwriting was beautiful, in blue ink:

“Kırmızı atkılı kadın için: Sayfa 47, üçüncü cümle.”

“For the woman with the red scarf: page 47, third sentence.”

Atkıma baktım. Kırmızı. Kalbim daha hızlı attı.

I looked at my scarf. It’s red. My heart beat faster.

Sayfa 47’yi açtım ve üçüncü cümleyi okudum: “Bazen cevap zaten uzun zamandır oradadır ama kimse doğru soruyu sormadı.”

I opened the book at page 47 and read the third sentence: “Sometimes the answer has been there for a long time, but nobody has asked the right question.”

“Bay Berger!” diye bağırdım. “Dün bu kitap kimin elindeydi?”

“Mr Berger!” I called. “Who had this book in their hands yesterday?”

Omuzlarını kaldırdı. “Birçok kişi, Lena. Yağmur yağıyor. Yağmurda herkes dükkana geliyor.”

He shrugged. “Lots of people, Lena. It’s raining. When it rains, everyone comes into the shop.”

Kağıdı çantama koydum. Bütün gün onu düşündüm.

I put the note in my pocket. I thought about it all day.
