Jamun Ağacı

The Rose-Apple Tree

Hindistan’da geniş bir nehrin kenarında büyük bir jamun ağacı vardı. Bütün yıl tatlı meyveleri oldu. Ağacın dallarında bir maymun yaşadı.

A big rose-apple tree stood on the bank of a wide river in India. It had sweet fruit all year. A monkey lived in its branches.

Maymun küçük ve hızlıydı. Her gün jamun meyveleri yedi ve nehri izledi. Mutluydu, ama bazen biraz yalnız hissetti.

The monkey was small and quick. Every day he ate rose-apples and watched the river. He was happy, but sometimes he felt a little lonely.

Sıcak bir öğleden sonra, nehirden büyük bir timsah çıktı. Ağacın altındaki yumuşak kuma uzandı. Yorgun ve aç göründü.

One hot afternoon, a big crocodile came out of the river. He lay down in the soft sand under the tree. He looked tired and hungry.

Maymun aşağıya, ona baktı. “Merhaba!” dedi. “Ağacımda bir misafirsin. Biraz meyve ister misin?”

The monkey looked down at him. “Hello!” he said. “You are a guest at my tree. Would you like some fruit?”

“Meyve mi?” diye sordu timsah. “Ben genellikle meyve yemem. Ama bugün çok açım.”

“Fruit?” asked the crocodile. “I don’t usually eat fruit. But I’m very hungry today.”

Maymun aşağıya birkaç jamun meyvesi attı. Timsah bir tane yedi, sonra bir tane daha yedi, sonra beş tane daha yedi.

The monkey threw down a few rose-apples. The crocodile ate one, then another, then five more.

“Bunlar harika!” dedi. “Bal kadar tatlılar. Teşekkür ederim, arkadaşım.”

“These are wonderful!” he said. “They are as sweet as honey. Thank you, my friend.”

Ondan sonra timsah her gün geri geldi. Maymun ona meyve attı ve saatlerce konuştular. Nehir, orman, yağmur ve yıldızlar hakkında konuştular.

After that, the crocodile came back every day. The monkey threw him fruit, and they talked for hours. They talked about the river, the forest, the rain and the stars.

Kısa sürede en iyi arkadaş oldular. Bir gün timsah, “Sen benim için bir kardeş gibisin,” dedi.

Soon they were best friends. “You are like a brother to me,” said the crocodile one day.

Timsah her akşam karısı için eve biraz jamun meyvesi götürdü. Karısı onları çok sevdi.

Every evening, the crocodile took some rose-apples home for his wife. She loved them very much.

Ama çok geçmeden meyveden daha fazlasını istedi.

But soon she wanted something more than fruit.
