星期一早上，山姆醒来，想说：“早上好。”但他没说出来。他发出的声音像一扇旧门。

On Monday morning Sam woke up and said, “Good morning.” Or he tried to. What came out sounded like an old door.

他又试了一次。还是没有声音。只有出气声。

He tried again. Nothing. Only air.

在厨房里，玛雅刚上完夜班回来。她看了他两秒钟。

In the kitchen, Maya was just back from her night shift. She looked at him for two seconds.

“张开嘴。说‘啊’。”

“Open your mouth. Say ‘ah’.”

山姆张开嘴。没有发出一声‘啊’。

Sam opened his mouth. No ‘ah’ came out.

“嗯。嗓子红了，有点发烧，不能说话。你死不了，”她说，“你感冒了。喝点茶，卧床休息，别说话。最后这一件事很容易做到。”

“Hm. Red throat, a bit of a temperature, no voice. You’re not dying,” she said. “You have a cold. Drink tea, stay in bed, don’t talk. That last one will be easy.”

山姆拿出一支笔，在披萨菜单背面写道：新工作。上周刚开始。我需要一张病条。

Sam took a pen and wrote on the back of a pizza menu: NEW JOB. STARTED LAST WEEK. I NEED A DOCTOR’S NOTE.

“那你需要一个真正的医生。我是护士，我要去睡觉了。”玛雅已经在房门口了。“利奥可以带你去。他认识转角的韦伯医生。利奥，你和他一起去，你帮他说话。”

“Then you need a real doctor. I’m a nurse, and I’m going to bed.” Maya was already at her door. “Leo can take you. He knows Dr. Weber on the corner. Leo, you go with him and you do the talking.”

利奥放下烤面包。他看起来非常非常高兴。山姆却不高兴。

Leo put down his toast. He looked very, very happy. Sam didn’t.
