Every morning for ten weeks, Nina and Grandma make bread together.

Every morning Grandma eats it and says one word.

« Non. »

“No.”

It is a very good word in that kitchen. Sara likes it too.

Today Grandma breaks Nina’s bread in two. She eats it slowly.

Elle mange tout. Elle ne dit rien longtemps.

She eats all of it. She says nothing for a long time.

Then she puts a key on the table.

Elle est petite et vieille. C’est la même clé.

It is small and old. It is the same key.

Now there are two keys on the table.

« Quelle clé est-ce ? » dit Nina.

“Which key is this?” Nina says.

« C’est ma clé », dit Mamie. « Maintenant, tu es la cuisinière. »

“That is my key,” Grandma says. “Now you are the cook.”

Nina regarde Mamie.

Nina looks at Grandma.

« Et toi ? »

“And you?”

Mamie regarde par la fenêtre.

Grandma looks out of the window.
