湖の光

10月に祖母の家へ行きました。祖母はアルプスの小さな村の湖のそばに住んでいます。村の名前はゼーヴィルです。冬には200人しか住んでいません。

In October I went to see my grandmother. She lives in a small village in the Alps, right by a lake. The village is called Seewil. In winter only two hundred people live there.

祖母の名前はフレーニです。70歳で、40年間物理の先生でした。賢くて、自分の目で見たものしか信じません。

My grandmother’s name is Vreni. She is seventy years old and was a physics teacher for forty years. She is clever, and she only believes what she can see.

電話で祖母は言いました。「ヨナス、来てちょうだい。助けてほしいの。カメラを持ってきて。」それ以上は説明してくれませんでした。

On the phone she told me, “Jonas, please come. I need your help. And bring your camera.” She didn’t want to explain more.

夜に着きました。祖母はスープを作り、台所で食べました。祖母は時計を見ました。「もうすぐ11時ね」と祖母は言いました。「窓のところへ来て。」

I arrived in the evening. She had cooked soup, and we ate in the kitchen. Then she looked at the clock. “It’s almost eleven,” she said. “Come with me to the window.”

外は真っ暗でした。湖は黒くて静かでした。そのとき見えました。湖の真ん中の深い水底に光がありました。青い光がゆっくり点滅していました。

Outside everything was dark. The lake was black and calm. Then I saw it. Deep under the water, in the middle of the lake, there was a light. It was blue, and it blinked slowly.

「3週間前からよ」と祖母は言いました。「毎晩11時に光るの。朝の4時には消えるわ。」

“For three weeks,” my grandmother said. “Every night at eleven. And at four in the morning it’s gone again.”
