No inverno, moram lá apenas duzentas pessoas.

In October I went to see my grandmother. She lives in a small village in the Alps, right by a lake. The village is called Seewil. In winter only two hundred people live there.

My grandmother’s name is Vreni. She is seventy years old and was a physics teacher for forty years. She is clever, and she only believes what she can see.

Ao telefone, ela me disse: “Jonas, venha, por favor. Preciso da sua ajuda. E traga a sua câmera.” Ela não quis explicar mais nada.

On the phone she told me, “Jonas, please come. I need your help. And bring your camera.” She didn’t want to explain more.

I arrived in the evening. She had cooked soup, and we ate in the kitchen. Then she looked at the clock. “It’s almost eleven,” she said. “Come with me to the window.”

Lá fora estava tudo escuro. O lago estava preto e calmo.

Outside everything was dark. The lake was black and calm. Then I saw it. Deep under the water, in the middle of the lake, there was a light. It was blue, and it blinked slowly.

“Há três semanas”, disse a minha avó. “Toda noite às onze. E às quatro da manhã ela desaparece.”

“For three weeks,” my grandmother said. “Every night at eleven. And at four in the morning it’s gone again.”
