Mi nombre es Nora Berg. Desde hace ocho meses vivo sola en la estación Ares. La estación está en Marte, en un valle rojo y vacío.

My name is Nora Berg. For eight months I have lived alone on Ares Station. The station stands on Mars, in a red, empty valley.

Soy geóloga. Todos los días recojo piedras y las estudio. Un pequeño robot me ayuda. Se llama Kiko. Puede cargar, medir y fotografiar. No puede hablar.

I am a geologist. Every day I collect stones and examine them. A small robot helps me. His name is Kiko. He can carry, measure and take photos. He can’t talk.

La estación no es grande. Tiene una cocina, un laboratorio, un dormitorio pequeño y una ventana. A través de la ventana veo montañas rojas y un cielo rosa. Por la tarde, el sol es azul. Eso me sigue pareciendo extraño.

The station isn’t big. It has a kitchen, a lab, a small bedroom and one window. Through the window I see red mountains and a pink sky. In the evening the sun is blue. I still find that strange.

Hablo con la Tierra por radio. Pero no es una conversación normal. Un mensaje de Marte a la Tierra tarda unos veinte minutos. La respuesta tarda otros veinte minutos.

I talk to Earth by radio. But it isn’t a normal conversation. A message from Mars to Earth takes about twenty minutes. The answer takes another twenty minutes.

Así que escribo mis preguntas por la mañana. Al mediodía llegan las respuestas. Así es mi vida aquí: pregunto, espero, leo.

So I write my questions in the morning. At noon the answers come. That is my life here: I ask, I wait, I read.
