Pytanie, którego nigdy nie zadałam

Nazywam się Nora Berg. Od ośmiu miesięcy mieszkam sama w stacji Ares. Stacja stoi na Marsie, w czerwonej, pustej dolinie.

My name is Nora Berg. For eight months I have lived alone on Ares Station. The station stands on Mars, in a red, empty valley.

Jestem geolożką. Codziennie zbieram kamienie i badam je. Mały robot mi pomaga. Nazywa się Kiko. Potrafi nosić, mierzyć i robić zdjęcia. Mówić nie potrafi.

I am a geologist. Every day I collect stones and examine them. A small robot helps me. His name is Kiko. He can carry, measure and take photos. He can’t talk.

Stacja nie jest duża. Ma kuchnię, laboratorium, małą sypialnię i okno. Przez okno widzę czerwone góry i różowe niebo. Wieczorem słońce jest niebieskie. Wciąż uważam to za dziwne.

The station isn’t big. It has a kitchen, a lab, a small bedroom and one window. Through the window I see red mountains and a pink sky. In the evening the sun is blue. I still find that strange.

Z Ziemią rozmawiam przez radio. Ale to nie jest normalna rozmowa. Wiadomość z Marsa na Ziemię potrzebuje około dwudziestu minut. Odpowiedź potrzebuje kolejnych dwudziestu minut.

I talk to Earth by radio. But it isn’t a normal conversation. A message from Mars to Earth takes about twenty minutes. The answer takes another twenty minutes.

Więc piszę moje pytania rano. W południe przychodzą odpowiedzi. Takie jest moje życie tutaj: pytam, czekam, czytam.

So I write my questions in the morning. At noon the answers come. That is my life here: I ask, I wait, I read.
