내 이름은 노라 베르크다. 8개월째 아레스 기지에서 혼자 살고 있다. 기지는 화성의 붉고 텅 빈 골짜기에 있다.

My name is Nora Berg. For eight months I have lived alone on Ares Station. The station stands on Mars, in a red, empty valley.

나는 지질학자다. 매일 돌을 모으고 조사한다. 작은 로봇 하나가 나를 돕는다. 이름은 키코다. 키코는 물건을 나르고, 측정하고, 사진을 찍을 수 있다. 말은 못 한다.

I am a geologist. Every day I collect stones and examine them. A small robot helps me. His name is Kiko. He can carry, measure and take photos. He can’t talk.

기지는 크지 않다. 부엌과 실험실, 작은 침실, 그리고 창문이 하나 있다. 창문으로 붉은 산과 분홍색 하늘이 보인다. 저녁에는 해가 파랗다. 나는 아직도 그게 이상하다.

The station isn’t big. It has a kitchen, a lab, a small bedroom and one window. Through the window I see red mountains and a pink sky. In the evening the sun is blue. I still find that strange.

지구와는 무전으로 이야기한다. 하지만 평범한 대화는 아니다. 화성에서 지구까지 메시지가 가는 데 20분쯤 걸린다. 답장이 오는 데도 20분이 더 걸린다.

I talk to Earth by radio. But it isn’t a normal conversation. A message from Mars to Earth takes about twenty minutes. The answer takes another twenty minutes.

그래서 나는 아침에 질문을 쓴다. 점심때 답장이 온다. 이곳에서의 내 생활은 이렇다. 묻고, 기다리고, 읽는다.

So I write my questions in the morning. At noon the answers come. That is my life here: I ask, I wait, I read.
