Benim adım Nora Berg. Sekiz aydır Ares istasyonunda yalnız yaşıyorum. İstasyon Mars’ta, kırmızı ve boş bir vadide duruyor.

My name is Nora Berg. For eight months I have lived alone on Ares Station. The station stands on Mars, in a red, empty valley.

Ben jeoloğum. Her gün taş topluyor ve onları inceliyorum. Küçük bir robot bana yardım ediyor. Adı Kiko. Yük taşıyabiliyor, ölçüm yapabiliyor ve fotoğraf çekebiliyor. Konuşamıyor.

I am a geologist. Every day I collect stones and examine them. A small robot helps me. His name is Kiko. He can carry, measure and take photos. He can’t talk.

İstasyon büyük değil. Bir mutfağı, bir laboratuvarı, küçük bir yatak odası ve bir penceresi var. Pencereden kırmızı dağları ve pembe bir gökyüzünü görüyorum. Akşamları güneş mavi oluyor. Bunu hâlâ garip buluyorum.

The station isn’t big. It has a kitchen, a lab, a small bedroom and one window. Through the window I see red mountains and a pink sky. In the evening the sun is blue. I still find that strange.

Dünya ile telsizle konuşuyorum. Ama bu normal bir konuşma değil. Mars’tan Dünya’ya bir mesaj yaklaşık yirmi dakika sürüyor. Cevap da yine yirmi dakika sürüyor.

I talk to Earth by radio. But it isn’t a normal conversation. A message from Mars to Earth takes about twenty minutes. The answer takes another twenty minutes.

Bu yüzden sorularımı sabah yazıyorum. Öğlen cevaplar geliyor. Hayatım burada böyle: Soruyorum, bekliyorum, okuyorum.

So I write my questions in the morning. At noon the answers come. That is my life here: I ask, I wait, I read.
