私の名前はノラ・ベルクです。8か月間、アレス基地で一人で暮らしています。基地は火星の赤くて何もない谷にあります。
My name is Nora Berg. For eight months I have lived alone on Ares Station. The station stands on Mars, in a red, empty valley.
私は地質学者です。毎日石を集めて調べています。小さなロボットが手伝ってくれます。名前はキコです。運んだり、測ったり、写真を撮ったりできます。話すことはできません。
I am a geologist. Every day I collect stones and examine them. A small robot helps me. His name is Kiko. He can carry, measure and take photos. He can’t talk.
基地は大きくありません。キッチン、実験室、小さな寝室、窓があります。窓から赤い山とピンクの空が見えます。夕方、太陽は青いです。私はまだ不思議に思います。
The station isn’t big. It has a kitchen, a lab, a small bedroom and one window. Through the window I see red mountains and a pink sky. In the evening the sun is blue. I still find that strange.
地球とは無線で話します。でも、普通の会話ではありません。火星から地球への通信には約20分かかります。返事にもまた20分かかります。
I talk to Earth by radio. But it isn’t a normal conversation. A message from Mars to Earth takes about twenty minutes. The answer takes another twenty minutes.
だから、朝に質問を書きます。昼に返事が来ます。ここの生活は、質問して、待って、読む、というものです。
So I write my questions in the morning. At noon the answers come. That is my life here: I ask, I wait, I read.
