Le dernier jour
The last day
Min-jun was a mechanic at a car-parts factory in Seoul. He was forty-eight years old. He fixed the machines there.
On the last Friday in March, the boss called the workers into the big hall.
Some workers looked at the floor. One woman started to cry. Min-jun stood at the back and listened.
« Je suis désolé, a dit le patron. L’entreprise ferme l’usine. Aujourd’hui est notre dernier jour. »
“I’m sorry,” said the boss. “The company is closing the factory. Today is our last day.”
Personne n’a rien dit. Puis l’ami de Min-jun de la ligne d’à côté a levé la main.
Nobody said anything. Then Min-jun’s friend from the next line put up his hand.
« Et notre argent ? a-t-il demandé. »
“What about our money?” he asked.
« Vous aurez deux mois de salaire. Et une lettre de moi. Je suis vraiment désolé. Vous êtes tous de bons ouvriers. »
“You’ll get two months’ pay. And a letter from me. I’m very sorry. You are all good workers.”
After the meeting, Min-jun went back to his machine. It was number seven, a big grey machine for car doors.
He started at the factory in 2004. He worked here for twenty-two years. Every day, he came at seven and left at five.
Il connaissait chaque machine par son bruit. Une bonne machine avait un bon bruit. Une machine malade avait un bruit différent.
He knew every machine by its sound. A good machine had a good sound. A sick machine had a different sound.
Son ami est venu et s’est mis à côté de lui. « Qu’est-ce que tu vas faire, Min-jun ? »
His friend came and stood next to him. “What are you going to do, Min-jun?”
« Je ne sais pas. Je n’ai jamais cherché de travail. Je suis venu ici à vingt-six ans. »
“I don’t know. I’ve never looked for a job. I came here at twenty-six.”
« Moi aussi. Qui veut un vieux mécanicien ? Tout est par ordinateur maintenant. »
“Me too. Who wants an old mechanic? Everything is computers now.”
