Ostatni dzień
The last day
Min-jun był mechanikiem w fabryce części samochodowych w Seulu. Miał czterdzieści osiem lat. Naprawiał tam maszyny.
Min-jun was a mechanic at a car-parts factory in Seoul. He was forty-eight years old. He fixed the machines there.
W ostatni piątek marca szef zawołał pracowników do wielkiej sali.
On the last Friday in March, the boss called the workers into the big hall.
Niektórzy pracownicy patrzyli na podłogę. Jedna kobieta zaczęła płakać. Min-jun stał z tyłu i słuchał.
Some workers looked at the floor. One woman started to cry. Min-jun stood at the back and listened.
„Przepraszam” – powiedział szef. „Firma zamyka fabrykę. Dzisiaj jest nasz ostatni dzień”.
“I’m sorry,” said the boss. “The company is closing the factory. Today is our last day.”
Nikt nic nie powiedział. Wtedy kolega Min-juna z sąsiedniej linii podniósł rękę.
Nobody said anything. Then Min-jun’s friend from the next line put up his hand.
„A co z naszymi pieniędzmi?” – zapytał.
“What about our money?” he asked.
„Dostaniecie wypłatę za dwa miesiące. I list ode mnie. Bardzo mi przykro. Wszyscy jesteście dobrymi pracownikami”.
“You’ll get two months’ pay. And a letter from me. I’m very sorry. You are all good workers.”
Po spotkaniu Min-jun wrócił do swojej maszyny. To był numer siedem, wielka szara maszyna do drzwi samochodowych.
After the meeting, Min-jun went back to his machine. It was number seven, a big grey machine for car doors.
Zaczął pracę w fabryce w 2004 roku. Pracował tu przez dwadzieścia dwa lata. Codziennie przychodził o siódmej i wychodził o piątej.
He started at the factory in 2004. He worked here for twenty-two years. Every day, he came at seven and left at five.
Znał każdą maszynę po jej dźwięku. Dobra maszyna miała dobry dźwięk. Zepsuta maszyna miała inny dźwięk.
He knew every machine by its sound. A good machine had a good sound. A sick machine had a different sound.
Jego kolega podszedł i stanął obok niego. „Co zamierzasz zrobić, Min-jun?”
His friend came and stood next to him. “What are you going to do, Min-jun?”
„Nie wiem. Nigdy nie szukałem pracy. Przyszedłem tutaj, kiedy miałem dwadzieścia sześć lat”.
“I don’t know. I’ve never looked for a job. I came here at twenty-six.”
„Ja też. Kto chce starego mechanika? Teraz wszędzie są komputery”.
“Me too. Who wants an old mechanic? Everything is computers now.”
