Son gün
The last day
Min-jun Seul’de bir araba parçası fabrikasında tamirciydi. Kırk sekiz yaşındaydı. Oradaki makineleri tamir ederdi.
Min-jun was a mechanic at a car-parts factory in Seoul. He was forty-eight years old. He fixed the machines there.
Mart ayının son cumasında, patron işçileri büyük salona çağırdı.
On the last Friday in March, the boss called the workers into the big hall.
Bazı işçiler yere baktı. Bir kadın ağlamaya başladı. Min-jun arkada durdu ve dinledi.
Some workers looked at the floor. One woman started to cry. Min-jun stood at the back and listened.
“Özür dilerim,” dedi patron. “Şirket fabrikayı kapatıyor. Bugün son günümüz.”
“I’m sorry,” said the boss. “The company is closing the factory. Today is our last day.”
Kimse bir şey söylemedi. Sonra Min-jun’un yan hattaki arkadaşı elini kaldırdı.
Nobody said anything. Then Min-jun’s friend from the next line put up his hand.
“Paramız ne olacak?” diye sordu.
“What about our money?” he asked.
“İki aylık maaş alacaksınız. Bir de benden bir mektup. Çok üzgünüm. Hepiniz iyi işçilersiniz.”
“You’ll get two months’ pay. And a letter from me. I’m very sorry. You are all good workers.”
Toplantıdan sonra, Min-jun makinesine geri döndü. Makinesi yedi numaraydı, araba kapıları için büyük gri bir makineydi.
After the meeting, Min-jun went back to his machine. It was number seven, a big grey machine for car doors.
Fabrikaya 2004 yılında başladı. Burada yirmi iki yıl çalıştı. Her gün yedi de geldi ve beşte çıktı.
He started at the factory in 2004. He worked here for twenty-two years. Every day, he came at seven and left at five.
Her makineyi sesinden tanırdı. İyi bir makinenin sesi iyiydi. Bozuk bir makinenin farklı bir sesi vardı.
He knew every machine by its sound. A good machine had a good sound. A sick machine had a different sound.
Arkadaşı gelip yanında durdu. “Ne yapacaksın, Min-jun?”
His friend came and stood next to him. “What are you going to do, Min-jun?”
“Bilmiyorum. Hiç iş aramadım. Buraya yirmi altı yaşında geldim.”
“I don’t know. I’ve never looked for a job. I came here at twenty-six.”
“Ben de. Yaşlı bir tamirciyi kim ister? Artık her şey bilgisayar.”
“Me too. Who wants an old mechanic? Everything is computers now.”
