Marta arrived in Lisbon on a hot Saturday in September. She was thirty-one, and she was a nurse from Poland.
Her new job at a big hospital started on Monday. But first she needed a room.
Zehn Minuten vom Krankenhaus. 400 Euro im Monat.“
She found an ad on her phone. “Room in a quiet flat. Ten minutes from the hospital. 400 euros a month.”
The flat was on the fourth floor of an old yellow building. There was no lift. Marta climbed the stairs with her heavy bag.
A small old woman opened the door. She had white hair and a black dress.
„Sind Sie die Krankenschwester?“, hat sie gefragt. „Ich bin Dona Fernanda. Schuhe aus, bitte.“
“You are the nurse?” she asked. “I am Dona Fernanda. Shoes off, please.”
„Guten Tag.
“Hello. I’m Marta.” Marta took off her shoes and put them by the door.
Fernanda hat ihr die Wohnung gezeigt. Sie war sauber und sehr ruhig. An jeder Wand waren alte Fotos.
Fernanda showed her the flat. It was clean and very quiet. There were old photos on every wall.
The room had a bed, a desk and a big window. Marta looked out. She saw red roofs and the river.
„Es ist schön“, hat sie gesagt. „Wie viel kostet das Zimmer genau?“
“It’s beautiful,” she said. “How much is the room, exactly?”
„Vierhundert Euro im Monat. Wasser ist im Preis.“
“Four hundred euros a month. Water is in the price.”
„Muss ich für das Internet bezahlen?“
“Do I have to pay for the internet?”
„Nein, Sie müssen nicht dafür bezahlen. Aber es ist langsam.“
“No, you don’t have to pay for it. But it’s slow.”
