Marta arrived in Lisbon on a hot Saturday in September. She was thirty-one, and she was a nurse from Poland.
Her new job at a big hospital started on Monday. But first she needed a room.
Ela encontrou um anúncio no celular. “Quarto em um apartamento silencioso. A dez minutos do hospital. 400 euros por mês.”
She found an ad on her phone. “Room in a quiet flat. Ten minutes from the hospital. 400 euros a month.”
The flat was on the fourth floor of an old yellow building. There was no lift. Marta climbed the stairs with her heavy bag.
Uma mulher idosa e pequena abriu a porta. Ela tinha cabelo branco e um vestido preto.
A small old woman opened the door. She had white hair and a black dress.
“Você é a enfermeira?”, ela perguntou. “Eu sou a Dona Fernanda. Sem sapatos, por favor.”
“You are the nurse?” she asked. “I am Dona Fernanda. Shoes off, please.”
“Olá. Eu sou a Marta.”
“Hello. I’m Marta.” Marta took off her shoes and put them by the door.
Fernanda mostrou o apartamento para ela. Era limpo e muito silencioso. Tinha fotos antigas em todas as paredes.
Fernanda showed her the flat. It was clean and very quiet. There were old photos on every wall.
O quarto tinha uma cama, uma mesa e uma janela grande. Marta olhou para fora. Ela viu telhados vermelhos e o rio.
The room had a bed, a desk and a big window. Marta looked out. She saw red roofs and the river.
“É lindo”, ela disse. “Quanto custa o quarto, exatamente?”
“It’s beautiful,” she said. “How much is the room, exactly?”
“Quatrocentos euros por mês. A água está no preço.”
“Four hundred euros a month. Water is in the price.”
“Eu tenho que pagar pela internet?”
“Do I have to pay for the internet?”
“Não, você não tem que pagar por ela. Mas é lenta.”
“No, you don’t have to pay for it. But it’s slow.”
