Marta arrived in Lisbon on a hot Saturday in September. She was thirty-one, and she was a nurse from Poland.
Her new job at a big hospital started on Monday. But first she needed a room.
Encontró un anuncio en su móvil. «Habitación en un piso tranquilo. A diez minutos del hospital. 400 euros al mes».
She found an ad on her phone. “Room in a quiet flat. Ten minutes from the hospital. 400 euros a month.”
No había ascensor.
The flat was on the fourth floor of an old yellow building. There was no lift. Marta climbed the stairs with her heavy bag.
A small old woman opened the door. She had white hair and a black dress.
«¿Es usted la enfermera?», preguntó. «Soy Dona Fernanda. Los zapatos fuera, por favor».
“You are the nurse?” she asked. “I am Dona Fernanda. Shoes off, please.”
«Hola. Soy Marta».
“Hello. I’m Marta.” Marta took off her shoes and put them by the door.
Fernanda le enseñó el piso. Estaba limpio y muy tranquilo. Había fotos viejas en cada pared.
Fernanda showed her the flat. It was clean and very quiet. There were old photos on every wall.
The room had a bed, a desk and a big window. Marta looked out. She saw red roofs and the river.
«Es muy bonito», dijo ella. «¿Cuánto cuesta la habitación, exactamente?».
“It’s beautiful,” she said. “How much is the room, exactly?”
«Cuatrocientos euros al mes. El agua está en el precio».
“Four hundred euros a month. Water is in the price.”
«¿Tengo que pagar por el internet?».
“Do I have to pay for the internet?”
«No, no tiene que pagar por el internet. Pero es lento».
“No, you don’t have to pay for it. But it’s slow.”
