Her new job at a big hospital started on Monday. But first she needed a room.
Ha trovato un annuncio sul telefono. «Stanza in un appartamento tranquillo. A dieci minuti dall’ospedale. 400 euro al mese.»
She found an ad on her phone. “Room in a quiet flat. Ten minutes from the hospital. 400 euros a month.”
The flat was on the fourth floor of an old yellow building. There was no lift. Marta climbed the stairs with her heavy bag.
Aveva i capelli bianchi e un vestito nero.
A small old woman opened the door. She had white hair and a black dress.
«Lei è l’infermiera?», ha chiesto. «Io sono Dona Fernanda. Niente scarpe, per favore.»
“You are the nurse?” she asked. “I am Dona Fernanda. Shoes off, please.”
«Buongiorno.
“Hello. I’m Marta.” Marta took off her shoes and put them by the door.
Fernanda le ha mostrato l’appartamento. Era pulito e molto tranquillo. C’erano vecchie foto su ogni parete.
Fernanda showed her the flat. It was clean and very quiet. There were old photos on every wall.
The room had a bed, a desk and a big window. Marta looked out. She saw red roofs and the river.
«È bellissima», ha detto. «Quanto costa la stanza, esattamente?»
“It’s beautiful,” she said. “How much is the room, exactly?”
«Quattrocento euro al mese. L’acqua è nel prezzo.»
“Four hundred euros a month. Water is in the price.”
«Devo pagare per internet?»
“Do I have to pay for the internet?”
«No, non deve pagare per internet. Ma è lento.»
“No, you don’t have to pay for it. But it’s slow.”
