Marta arrived in Lisbon on a hot Saturday in September. She was thirty-one, and she was a nurse from Poland.
Her new job at a big hospital started on Monday. But first she needed a room.
She found an ad on her phone. “Room in a quiet flat. Ten minutes from the hospital. 400 euros a month.”
The flat was on the fourth floor of an old yellow building. There was no lift. Marta climbed the stairs with her heavy bag.
O femeie bătrână și scundă a deschis ușa. Avea părul alb și o rochie neagră.
A small old woman opened the door. She had white hair and a black dress.
„Dumneavoastră sunteți asistenta?”, a întrebat ea. „Eu sunt Dona Fernanda. Fără pantofi, vă rog.”
“You are the nurse?” she asked. “I am Dona Fernanda. Shoes off, please.”
„Bună ziua. Sunt Marta.” Marta s-a descălțat și a pus pantofii lângă ușă.
“Hello. I’m Marta.” Marta took off her shoes and put them by the door.
Fernanda i-a arătat apartamentul. Era curat și foarte liniștit. Erau fotografii vechi pe fiecare perete.
Fernanda showed her the flat. It was clean and very quiet. There were old photos on every wall.
Marta s-a uitat afară. A văzut acoperișuri roșii și râul.
The room had a bed, a desk and a big window. Marta looked out. She saw red roofs and the river.
„Este frumos”, a spus ea. „Cât costă camera, mai exact?”
“It’s beautiful,” she said. “How much is the room, exactly?”
„Patru sute de euro pe lună. Apa este în preț.”
“Four hundred euros a month. Water is in the price.”
„Trebuie să plătesc pentru internet?”
“Do I have to pay for the internet?”
„Nu, nu trebuie să plătiți pentru el. Dar este lent.”
“No, you don’t have to pay for it. But it’s slow.”
