Abrindo o leitor…
It is ten o’clock at night. The last bus stops on Bridge Street in Hollin Bridge. A young woman gets off. She has one big bag. Her name is Ana. She is twenty-four.
São dez horas da noite. O último ônibus para na Bridge Street, em Hollin Bridge. Uma mulher jovem desce. Ela tem uma bolsa grande. O nome dela é Ana. Ela tem vinte e quatro anos.
Ana looks at her phone. On the phone, there is an advert: WE NEED A NIGHT BAKER. NO EXPERIENCE. ROOM UPSTAIRS. BELL’S BAKERY, 7 BRIDGE STREET.
Ana olha para o celular dela. No celular, tem um anúncio: PRECISA-SE DE PADEIRO NOTURNO. SEM EXPERIÊNCIA. QUARTO NO ANDAR DE CIMA. BELL’S BAKERY, BRIDGE STREET, NÚMERO 7.
Number seven is an old stone shop. Over the door, there is a name: BELL’S BAKERY. The shop is dark. Ana knocks on the door. Nothing. She knocks again.
O número sete é uma loja velha de pedra. Em cima da porta, tem um nome: BELL’S BAKERY. A loja está escura. Ana bate na porta. Nada. Ela bate de novo.
Then there is a light upstairs. The door opens. A big old man stands there. He has white hair and a red face. He isn’t happy.
Aí tem uma luz no andar de cima. A porta abre. Um homem velho e grande está ali. Ele tem cabelo branco e o rosto vermelho. Ele não está feliz.
“We’re closed,” he says.
“Estamos fechados”, ele diz.
“Hello. Good evening,” Ana says. “My name is Ana. I’m here for the work. The night baker.”
“Olá. Boa noite”, Ana diz. “Meu nome é Ana. Eu estou aqui pelo trabalho. De padeira noturna.”
The man looks at her. Then he looks at her bag. “You’re Ana? Ana from the email?”
O homem olha para ela. Depois ele olha para a bolsa dela. “Você é a Ana? A Ana do e-mail?”
“Yes. Ana.”
“Sim. Ana.”
“I’m Walter. Walter Bell. Can you bake?”
“Eu sou o Walter. Walter Bell. Você sabe fazer pão?”
Ana doesn’t understand. “Sorry. Can you say that again, please?”
Ana não entende. “Desculpe. Você pode falar de novo, por favor?”
“Can you bake? Can you make bread?” He says it again, very slowly.
“Você sabe assar? Sabe fazer pão?” Ele fala de novo, bem devagar.
“No,” Ana says. “But the advert says: no experience.”
“Não”, Ana diz. “Mas o anúncio diz: sem experiência.”
Walter is quiet. Then he laughs, a short laugh. “Yes. It says that. Come in. It’s cold.”
Walter fica quieto. Aí ele ri, uma risada curta. “Sim. Diz isso. Entra. Está frio.”
Inside, the bakery is warm. There is a big oven at the back. An old black dog sleeps next to the oven. He opens one eye and looks at Ana.
Lá dentro, a padaria é quentinha. Tem um forno grande no fundo. Um cachorro preto e velho dorme perto do forno. Ele abre um olho e olha para a Ana.
