Bây giờ là mười giờ đêm. Chuyến xe buýt cuối cùng đỗ ở phố Bridge Street tại Hollin Bridge. Một người phụ nữ trẻ bước xuống. Cô có một cái túi to. Tên cô là Ana. Cô hai mươi tư tuổi.
It is ten o’clock at night. The last bus stops on Bridge Street in Hollin Bridge. A young woman gets off. She has one big bag. Her name is Ana. She is twenty-four.
Ana looks at her phone. On the phone, there is an advert: WE NEED A NIGHT BAKER. NO EXPERIENCE. ROOM UPSTAIRS. BELL’S BAKERY, 7 BRIDGE STREET.
Số bảy là một cửa hàng cũ bằng đá. Phía trên cửa có một cái tên: BELL’S BAKERY. Cửa hàng tối om. Ana gõ cửa. Không có tiếng trả lời. Cô gõ cửa lần nữa.
Number seven is an old stone shop. Over the door, there is a name: BELL’S BAKERY. The shop is dark. Ana knocks on the door. Nothing. She knocks again.
Sau đó, ở tầng trên có đèn sáng. Cửa mở. Một người đàn ông già to lớn đứng ở đó. Ông có tóc trắng và mặt đỏ. Ông không vui.
Then there is a light upstairs. The door opens. A big old man stands there. He has white hair and a red face. He isn’t happy.
“Chúng tôi đóng cửa rồi,” ông nói.
“We’re closed,” he says.
“Xin chào ông. Chào buổi tối,” Ana nói. “Tên cháu là Ana. Cháu đến vì công việc. Thợ làm bánh ca đêm ạ.”
“Hello. Good evening,” Ana says. “My name is Ana. I’m here for the work. The night baker.”
Người đàn ông nhìn cô. Sau đó ông nhìn cái túi của cô. “Cháu là Ana à? Ana gửi thư điện tử phải không?”
The man looks at her. Then he looks at her bag. “You’re Ana? Ana from the email?”
“Vâng. Cháu là Ana ạ.”
“Yes. Ana.”
“Ta là Walter. Walter Bell. Cháu biết nướng bánh không?”
“I’m Walter. Walter Bell. Can you bake?”
Ana không hiểu. “Xin lỗi ông. Ông nói lại được không ạ?”
Ana doesn’t understand. “Sorry. Can you say that again, please?”
“Cháu biết nướng bánh không? Cháu biết làm bánh mì không?” Ông nói lại, rất chậm.
“Can you bake? Can you make bread?” He says it again, very slowly.
“Dạ không,” Ana nói. “Nhưng quảng cáo nói: không cần kinh nghiệm ạ.”
“No,” Ana says. “But the advert says: no experience.”
Walter im lặng. Sau đó ông cười một tiếng ngắn. “Ừ. Quảng cáo nói thế. Vào đi. Trời lạnh lắm.”
Walter is quiet. Then he laughs, a short laugh. “Yes. It says that. Come in. It’s cold.”
Bên trong, tiệm bánh rất ấm. Phía sau có một cái lò nướng to. Một con chó đen già ngủ bên cạnh cái lò nướng. Nó mở một mắt và nhìn Ana.
Inside, the bakery is warm. There is a big oven at the back. An old black dog sleeps next to the oven. He opens one eye and looks at Ana.
