Jest dziesiąta w nocy. Ostatni autobus zatrzymuje się na Bridge Street w Hollin Bridge. Młoda kobieta wysiada. Ma jedną dużą torbę. Nazywa się Ana. Ma dwadzieścia cztery lata.
It is ten o’clock at night. The last bus stops on Bridge Street in Hollin Bridge. A young woman gets off. She has one big bag. Her name is Ana. She is twenty-four.
Ana patrzy na telefon. Na telefonie jest ogłoszenie: POTRZEBUJEMY PIEKARZA NA NOC. BEZ DOŚWIADCZENIA. POKÓJ NA GÓRZE. BELL’S BAKERY, 7 BRIDGE STREET.
Ana looks at her phone. On the phone, there is an advert: WE NEED A NIGHT BAKER. NO EXPERIENCE. ROOM UPSTAIRS. BELL’S BAKERY, 7 BRIDGE STREET.
Numer siedem to stary kamienny sklep. Nad drzwiami jest napis: BELL’S BAKERY. W sklepie jest ciemno. Ana puka do drzwi. Nic. Puka znowu.
Number seven is an old stone shop. Over the door, there is a name: BELL’S BAKERY. The shop is dark. Ana knocks on the door. Nothing. She knocks again.
Potem na górze jest światło. Drzwi się otwierają. Stoi tam duży, stary mężczyzna. Ma białe włosy i czerwoną twarz. Nie jest zadowolony.
Then there is a light upstairs. The door opens. A big old man stands there. He has white hair and a red face. He isn’t happy.
„Mamy zamknięte” — mówi.
“We’re closed,” he says.
„Dzień dobry. Dobry wieczór” — mówi Ana. „Nazywam się Ana. Przyszłam do pracy. Jako nocna piekarka”.
“Hello. Good evening,” Ana says. “My name is Ana. I’m here for the work. The night baker.”
Mężczyzna patrzy na nią. Potem patrzy na jej torbę. „Pani to Ana? Ana z maila?”
The man looks at her. Then he looks at her bag. “You’re Ana? Ana from the email?”
„Tak. Ana”.
“Yes. Ana.”
„Jestem Walter. Walter Bell. Umie pani piec?”
“I’m Walter. Walter Bell. Can you bake?”
Ana nie rozumie. „Przepraszam. Czy może pan powtórzyć?”
Ana doesn’t understand. “Sorry. Can you say that again, please?”
„Umie pani piec? Umie pani robić chleb?” Mówi to jeszcze raz, bardzo wolno.
“Can you bake? Can you make bread?” He says it again, very slowly.
„Nie” — mówi Ana. „Ale w ogłoszeniu jest napisane: bez doświadczenia”.
“No,” Ana says. “But the advert says: no experience.”
Walter milczy. Potem śmieje się krótko. „Tak. Tak jest napisane. Proszę wejść. Jest zimno”.
Walter is quiet. Then he laughs, a short laugh. “Yes. It says that. Come in. It’s cold.”
W środku piekarni jest ciepło. Z tyłu jest duży piec. Stary czarny pies śpi obok pieca. Otwiera jedno oko i patrzy na Anę.
Inside, the bakery is warm. There is a big oven at the back. An old black dog sleeps next to the oven. He opens one eye and looks at Ana.
