The Last Bus

现在是晚上十点。最后一班车停在 Hollin Bridge 的 Bridge Street。一个年轻女人下车。她有一个大包。她叫 Ana。她二十四岁。

It is ten o’clock at night. The last bus stops on Bridge Street in Hollin Bridge. A young woman gets off. She has one big bag. Her name is Ana. She is twenty-four.

Ana 看着手机。手机上有一个广告：我们需要一个夜间面包师。不要经验。楼上有房间。Bell’s Bakery，Bridge Street 七号。

Ana looks at her phone. On the phone, there is an advert: WE NEED A NIGHT BAKER. NO EXPERIENCE. ROOM UPSTAIRS. BELL’S BAKERY, 7 BRIDGE STREET.

七号是一家石头老店。门上面有一个名字：Bell’s Bakery。店里很黑。Ana 敲门。没有人开门。她又敲了一次。

Number seven is an old stone shop. Over the door, there is a name: BELL’S BAKERY. The shop is dark. Ana knocks on the door. Nothing. She knocks again.

后来，楼上有灯光。门开了。一个高大的老人站在那里。他有白头发，红脸。他不高兴。

Then there is a light upstairs. The door opens. A big old man stands there. He has white hair and a red face. He isn’t happy.

“我们关门了，”他说。

“We’re closed,” he says.

“你好。晚上好，”Ana 说。“我叫 Ana。我来这里工作。做夜间面包师。”

“Hello. Good evening,” Ana says. “My name is Ana. I’m here for the work. The night baker.”

老人看着她。然后他看着她的包。“你是 Ana？发电子邮件的 Ana 吗？”

The man looks at her. Then he looks at her bag. “You’re Ana? Ana from the email?”

“对。我是 Ana。”

“Yes. Ana.”

“我是 Walter。Walter Bell。你会做面包吗？”

“I’m Walter. Walter Bell. Can you bake?”

Ana 听不懂。“对不起。你可以再说一次吗？”

Ana doesn’t understand. “Sorry. Can you say that again, please?”

“你会做吗？你会做面包吗？”他又说了一次，说得很慢。

“Can you bake? Can you make bread?” He says it again, very slowly.

“不会，”Ana 说。“但是广告说：不要经验。”

“No,” Ana says. “But the advert says: no experience.”

Walter 不说话。然后他笑了一下。“对。广告这样说。进来吧。外面很冷。”

Walter is quiet. Then he laughs, a short laugh. “Yes. It says that. Come in. It’s cold.”
