Este ora zece noaptea. Ultimul autobuz oprește pe Bridge Street în Hollin Bridge. O tânără coboară. Are o geantă mare. Numele ei este Ana. Are douăzeci și patru de ani.
It is ten o’clock at night. The last bus stops on Bridge Street in Hollin Bridge. A young woman gets off. She has one big bag. Her name is Ana. She is twenty-four.
Ana se uită la telefon. Pe telefon este un anunț: CĂUTĂM BRUTAR DE NOAPTE. FĂRĂ EXPERIENȚĂ. CAMERĂ LA ETAJ. BELL’S BAKERY, 7 BRIDGE STREET.
Ana looks at her phone. On the phone, there is an advert: WE NEED A NIGHT BAKER. NO EXPERIENCE. ROOM UPSTAIRS. BELL’S BAKERY, 7 BRIDGE STREET.
Numărul șapte este un magazin vechi de piatră. Deasupra ușii este un nume: BELL’S BAKERY. În magazin este întuneric. Ana bate la ușă. Nimic. Bate din nou.
Number seven is an old stone shop. Over the door, there is a name: BELL’S BAKERY. The shop is dark. Ana knocks on the door. Nothing. She knocks again.
Apoi este o lumină la etaj. Ușa se deschide. Un bătrân mare stă acolo. Are părul alb și fața roșie. Nu este bucuros.
Then there is a light upstairs. The door opens. A big old man stands there. He has white hair and a red face. He isn’t happy.
„Avem închis”, spune el.
“We’re closed,” he says.
„Bună ziua. Bună seara”, spune Ana. „Numele meu este Ana. Sunt aici pentru muncă. Brutarul de noapte.”
“Hello. Good evening,” Ana says. “My name is Ana. I’m here for the work. The night baker.”
Bărbatul se uită la ea. Apoi se uită la geanta ei. „Dumneavoastră sunteți Ana? Ana din e-mail?”
The man looks at her. Then he looks at her bag. “You’re Ana? Ana from the email?”
„Da. Ana.”
“Yes. Ana.”
„Eu sunt Walter. Walter Bell. Știți să coaceți pâine?”
“I’m Walter. Walter Bell. Can you bake?”
Ana nu înțelege. „Pardon. Puteți să spuneți din nou, vă rog?”
Ana doesn’t understand. “Sorry. Can you say that again, please?”
„Știți să coaceți? Puteți să faceți pâine?” El spune din nou, foarte încet.
“Can you bake? Can you make bread?” He says it again, very slowly.
„Nu”, spune Ana. „Dar anunțul spune: fără experiență.”
“No,” Ana says. “But the advert says: no experience.”
Walter tace. Apoi râde, un râs scurt. „Da. Așa spune. Intră. Este frig.”
Walter is quiet. Then he laughs, a short laugh. “Yes. It says that. Come in. It’s cold.”
Înăuntru, în brutărie este cald. În spate este un cuptor mare. Un câine negru și bătrân doarme lângă cuptor. Deschide un ochi și se uită la Ana.
Inside, the bakery is warm. There is a big oven at the back. An old black dog sleeps next to the oven. He opens one eye and looks at Ana.
